Digital marketing matters for students because it teaches practical ways to reach audiences online and the analytical, ethical and communication skills needed to judge whether that work is effective. Students can build evidence of those abilities through coursework, simulations, internships or self-directed projects—but a certificate or portfolio is not a guarantee of employment.
Why digital marketing matters for students
Marketing increasingly brings together channel choices, data, customer experience and technology. The American Marketing Association’s 2025 skills report identifies digital marketing, data and analytics, proving return on investment (ROI), and data privacy and compliance among the largest job-specific competency gaps it found. The report drew on a survey of 1,279 marketing practitioners, more than 450 job postings, expert interviews and secondary data. Its survey went to AMA subscribers and its respondents skewed toward North American marketers, AMA members, mid-level managers, small companies and higher education, so it offers a useful view of industry needs rather than a universal measure of every employer. For students, the value is not limited to preparing for a marketing job. Learning to define an audience, choose a channel, interpret results and handle data responsibly can help with projects, campus organizations, small businesses and other work that depends on communicating online.
What digital marketing skills should students learn?
Build a mix of practical execution and sound judgment. The AMA’s 2025 competency model puts marketing ethics at its center, adds an Essential Capabilities domain for interpersonal and cognitive skills, and renames the framework domain “Customer Experience” as “Channels and Technology.” This emphasizes that tools matter, but so do the decisions and relationships around them. See the AMA Marketing Competency Model.

#1 Best Overall
- Digital execution: Understand how channels such as search, social media, email and e-commerce can serve different objectives. Learn the basic workflow of planning, publishing and reviewing activity.
- Data and analytics: Read campaign or audience data, identify what it can and cannot show, and connect measurements to the original objective.
- ROI and measurement: Set a measurement plan before activity begins. Be able to explain what outcome matters and how you would assess whether the work contributed to it.
- Privacy, compliance and ethics: Treat data use, consent, accuracy and responsible communication as part of campaign planning—not as an afterthought.
- Communication and adaptability: Explain decisions clearly, work with others, respond to changing channels and revise a plan when evidence suggests it is not working.
How generative AI fits
Generative AI is part of the changing skills landscape, but it does not replace the need for marketing judgment. In the AMA’s 2025 report, 43% of survey respondents predicted generative AI would become more important over the following five years. The survey responses were collected in August 2024; this is a practitioner expectation, not a forecast of student employment outcomes. The report quotes AMA Director for Research and Innovation Jen OBrien: “Gen AI is the top rated future skill, with 43% of survey respondents predicting it will become more important in five years.”
How students can get digital marketing experience
Experience does not have to begin with a paid campaign or expensive software. A useful project can be a class assignment, a simulated campaign, support for a student group, an internship task or a self-directed exercise. The important part is documenting the reasoning and evidence, not just showing a polished post.
- Choose a clear objective. State what the project is trying to accomplish, such as increasing awareness of an event or helping a defined audience find information.
- Describe the audience. Identify who the communication is for and what that audience needs. Avoid claiming detailed knowledge you have not gathered.
- Select an appropriate channel. Explain why the chosen channel fits the objective and audience, rather than listing every platform.
- Plan measurement in advance. Identify a relevant indicator and how you would collect or interpret it. Distinguish activity measures, such as reach, from outcomes that connect to the objective.
- Report results honestly. Separate observed results from assumptions, note limitations and do not imply that a project proves causation if it does not.
- Reflect on the next step. Explain what you would change, test or investigate next and why.
Turn the work into a concise portfolio entry: objective, audience, channel choice, measurement approach, results and reflection. Remove personal or sensitive information and get permission before publishing work created for an organization or client.
Choosing a course, certificate or other route
No single learning route is established as best for employment outcomes. Compare options against your goals rather than assuming a credential alone will make you job-ready.

- Hands-on practice: Does the route ask you to make decisions and work through realistic tasks?
- Work samples: Will you produce artifacts you can explain, or only complete lessons and quizzes?
- Cost and time: Consider the total commitment and whether it fits your schedule and budget.
- Recognition: Check whether employers or institutions relevant to your goals value the credential.
- Curriculum currency: Look for coverage of measurement, privacy, AI and changing channels, not just tool demonstrations.

Digital marketing skills can be relevant to a range of entry-level and support roles, depending on a student’s experience and an employer’s requirements. Google’s certificate booklet gives examples including marketing coordinator, marketing assistant, associate or specialist, SEO specialist or analyst, paid search specialist, media coordinator or planner, email marketing specialist, and e-commerce associate or analyst. These are examples from the program material, not a complete list of job titles or guaranteed outcomes.
For U.S. labor-market context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected an annual average of 87,200 openings during 2024–2034 for the broad category of market research analysts and marketing specialists. It reported a 2024 median annual wage of $76,950 for that category. Neither figure isolates digital marketing roles or represents a starting salary; the wage is a median across the occupation group. How students can make the skills useful
Choose a small, responsible project that fits your interests, then make your choices and evidence visible. A strong work sample explains the purpose, audience, channel, measurement and limitations; it does not need to claim dramatic results. Pair that evidence with communication, ethical judgment and a willingness to learn new tools, since platforms and practices change.
