Re:

Why Did U.S. Airlines Stop Flying the Boeing 747?

United and Delta retired passenger Boeing 747s in 2017 because newer twin-engine jets offered better fuel and maintenance economics and fit route demand more closely. Here is what the airlines reported and where the evidence stops.

U.S. passenger airlines retired the Boeing 747 because newer twin-engine widebody jets could cover long-haul routes with lower fuel burn and maintenance costs, and because the 747’s very large seat count was often more than a route needed. United and Delta both completed their passenger 747 exits in 2017, before COVID-19 affected airline fleet plans. These were fleet-economics decisions about passenger service. They did not end every use of the aircraft.

When U.S. passenger 747 service ended

Two carriers account for the U.S. passenger 747 story. United announced its retirement plan first, then moved its final flight earlier than planned. Delta closed out its final 747 fleet at the end of 2017. The table below lists what the sources establish for each airline.

Airline Retirement plan Passenger 747 outcome Source
United Airlines Announced March 8, 2016 that its 747s would leave scheduled service by the end of 2018 Final scheduled 747 flight operated November 7, 2017 United fleet update, March 8, 2016; United farewell release, November 7, 2017
Delta Air Lines Not stated in the sources reviewed Final 747 fleet retired in December 2017; Delta’s museum history describes this as the end of its 747 service, which it counts as 47 years when combined with Northwest’s history Delta Flight Museum, Boeing 747 history

Delta is generally described as the last U.S. airline to retire passenger 747s. That claim rests on the December 2017 date in Delta’s own history; no other U.S. carrier’s later passenger retirement was identified in the sources reviewed.

Why the economics pushed airlines away from the 747

The airlines did not give a single cause. Their public material points to several factors that work together. The sources support the following as relevant, but they do not assign each one a weight.

Fuel burn

The 747 is a four-engine aircraft. Newer twin-engine widebodies burn less fuel per seat on comparable long-haul missions, and United’s replacement case put fuel burn at the center of its projections (see below).

Maintenance cost

Maintenance spending rises as an aircraft ages. Boeing’s 2018 Commercial Market Outlook lists aircraft age, flight hours, pressurization cycles and rising maintenance requirements among the factors operators weigh when deciding whether to retire a type, alongside the fuel economy and capabilities of replacement aircraft. That document is Boeing’s general explanation of fleet economics, not a statement by Delta or United about how much each factor counted in their decisions. See the Boeing 2018 Commercial Market Outlook.

Seat count and route demand

A 747 carries far more passengers than many long-haul routes can fill. Airlines that can match capacity to demand avoid flying large, expensive aircraft with empty seats. Smaller twin-engine widebodies let an airline add or trim capacity route by route. This is the factor most directly tied to the 747’s size, and it is why the aircraft’s capacity could work against it.

Fleet simplicity and replacement

Replacing an older type with a newer family can reduce the number of aircraft types an airline must support. Delta’s fleet transformation presentation described swapping 747s and other older aircraft for newer, more efficient types. See the Delta fleet transformation presentation (2017) filed with the SEC.

What United projected about replacement economics

United’s fleet replacement investor material, published around 2019, gives the most specific numbers in the public record. These figures are United’s projections for a replacement program, not measured results from every route or retired aircraft. The United fleet replacement investor material is the primary source.

  • About 33 percent lower total fuel burn for the replacement aircraft in 50 firm orders, compared with the aircraft being replaced.
  • About 40 percent lower maintenance cost per available seat mile on the same basis.
  • An average seat count about 19 percent lower across the 50 aircraft.
  • About a 10 percent reduction in the system-wide international fleet seat count, largely from retiring the 747.

No independent study measuring the savings realized across the full retired 747 fleet was identified. Readers should treat the United figures as the company’s forecast at the time of the investor material.

Which aircraft replaced the 747

Delta’s fleet transformation material named the Airbus A350, A321 and Boeing 737-900 among the types replacing its older aircraft, including the 747. The A350 is a twin-engine widebody suited to long-haul service, which is why the sources connect it to 747 replacement. The sources do not provide a complete performance comparison of these models, so this article does not rank them on range, payload or speed.

Why COVID-19 is not the explanation

A common assumption is that the pandemic ended the U.S. passenger 747. The dates contradict that. United flew its final scheduled 747 in November 2017, and Delta completed its final 747 retirement in December 2017. Delta made separate fleet decisions in 2020 during the pandemic, but those came after the 747 exits were complete.

What “stopped flying” does and does not mean

The retirements applied to U.S. passenger airline service. They did not remove the 747 from aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a 2023 airworthiness directive affecting Boeing 747-400 variants, which shows the type remained in the regulatory system years after the U.S. passenger exits. The 2023 FAA airworthiness directive is the primary document. The sources reviewed do not establish a complete, current worldwide operator list, so this article does not state which airlines still fly the type or in what roles.

Freight is the use most often associated with the 747 after its passenger retirement, but the sources reviewed do not quantify cargo operations, so no figure is given here.

What is and is not established

  • Established: United and Delta both retired passenger 747s in 2017, and both were fleet decisions made before COVID-19.
  • Established: the airlines pointed to fuel burn, maintenance, seat count and replacement with newer twin-engine types.
  • Not established: the relative weight each factor carried in either airline’s decision. No named executive quotation explaining that weighting was found, so none is quoted here.
  • Not established: how much of United’s projected savings was realized in practice.

The short answer holds: the 747’s size and four-engine economics were more costly than newer twin-engine widebodies on the routes these airlines flew, and the replacements matched capacity to demand better.
