Boeing did not publicly give a clear, department-specific reason for dismantling its global diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) department. The company described a broader financial and operational restructuring in October 2024; a contemporaneous Reuters report said the DEI team’s staff would be combined with another human-resources group. The available evidence supports describing the move as a consolidation during a wider reset—not as a decision Boeing explicitly tied to one political, legal or reputational pressure.
What happened to Boeing’s DEI department?
On October 31, 2024, Reuters reported that Boeing had dismantled its global DEI department and planned to combine its staff with another HR team focused on talent and employee experience. Reuters attributed the organizational details to Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter. The report describes a departmental reorganization; it does not say the team’s employees were all fired.
Ten days earlier, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg had announced a broad restructuring and a planned workforce reduction of roughly 10%. In a message to employees, he said the company needed “structural changes” and would focus resources on core work. Boeing tied that workforce plan to financial reality and focused priorities, but the message did not identify the DEI department as a specific cost-saving target.
Did Boeing explain why it dismantled the department?
Not specifically in the company statement available from October 2024. Ortberg described the wider business rationale: “Beyond navigating our current environment, restoring our company requires tough decisions and we will have to make structural changes to ensure we can stay competitive and deliver for our customers over the long term.” He also said Boeing needed to focus resources on core areas rather than spread itself across too many efforts.

Those comments establish Boeing’s public explanation for its broad restructuring, not a direct explanation for the DEI department’s fate. Reuters’ report supplies the department-level detail and says staff were to be combined with another HR team. The available accounts do not establish that any single legal, political, reputational or other pressure decisively caused the change.
What was Boeing’s approach to diversity before the change?
Diversity and inclusion were part of HR leadership’s remit
When Boeing named Uma Amuluru chief human resources officer on February 22, 2024, the company said her responsibilities would include diversity and inclusion initiatives alongside talent planning and acquisition, learning and development, compensation and benefits, and employee and labor relations.
The company reported workforce measures in 2024
In announcing its 2024 Sustainability & Social Impact Report on June 25, Boeing said the share of its U.S. workforce that was racial or ethnic minorities had increased by 6.4 percentage points since 2020. It also reported a 1.2-percentage-point increase since 2020 in the share of its global workforce that was women. These are company-reported changes over the stated period; they do not by themselves explain the later department reorganization.
What did Boeing say about inclusion afterward?
In its 2025 proxy statement, Boeing’s board said the company remained committed to recruiting and retaining top talent and creating an inclusive work environment. The board also said Boeing prohibited discriminatory hiring and used a merit-based performance system intended to ensure equality of opportunity, not equality of outcomes.

Those arguments represent the proponents’ views, not established findings or Boeing’s explanation for the reorganization. The board’s statements describe its stated position; they do not establish how the department’s work or staffing was organized after the reported consolidation.

- Documented by Boeing: In October 2024, the company announced a broad recovery restructuring, including a planned workforce reduction of roughly 10%, and cited financial reality, focused priorities and structural change.
- Reported by Reuters: Boeing dismantled its global DEI department and planned to combine its staff with another HR team focused on talent and employee experience.
- Not established: The sources do not show a specific Boeing statement naming the DEI department as a cost-cutting target, nor do they prove a single decisive motive for the department’s consolidation.
The department change should not be treated as evidence about Boeing’s aircraft safety or quality performance: the cited sources do not establish a causal link between the DEI reorganization and those issues.
