Delta has not scrapped complimentary upgrades. Its published rules still offer eligible Medallion members and select partner elites upgrades to certain cabins, but eligibility, fare type, inventory and timing all matter. Delta also reserves the right to limit upgrade inventory or delay processing. That helps explain why an empty-looking seat is no guarantee—though public information does not establish how often Delta holds seats back to sell them.
Are Delta’s complimentary upgrades going away?
No. Delta’s current program rules still provide complimentary upgrade access to eligible Medallion members and select partner elites, subject to the rules for the flight and the availability of upgrade inventory. Eligible destinations include Delta Comfort and Delta First, as well as Delta One and Delta Premium Select on domestic U.S. flights. Upgrades are not available on every flight or in every market, and the timing window is based on the highest-status Medallion member in the reservation. Delta’s program rules describe the current terms.
Delta Basic fares—including Basic Economy—are excluded from complimentary upgrade access. That makes the fare purchased a basic threshold, not just the traveler’s loyalty status. Delta’s travel-experience page also says Main Basic earns no miles, unlike eligible fare types.
Why an open seat may not clear an upgrade
Delta says it may limit the inventory made available for upgrades for any reason and may delay processing until check-in or the gate. It also warns that a seat shown as available on the seat map does not necessarily belong to upgrade inventory. The map is therefore not a reliable indicator that a complimentary upgrade can clear. These provisions are in Delta’s upgrade rules.

That policy leaves Delta discretion over both which seats are offered for upgrades and when an eligible request is processed. It does not, by itself, show that a particular seat was withheld for a paying customer or quantify how often that happens.
How fare type affects upgrade priority
Delta’s newer fare experiences are labeled Basic, Classic and Extra. The airline says Medallion status and the cabin or product purchased remain the most significant upgrade-eligibility factors. When Medallion and Million Miler status are equivalent and members bought the same product, Extra earns priority over the other fare experiences. Delta’s fare and travel-experience information describes Extra’s additional benefits, including higher boarding priority within Delta Main, a higher base mileage rate, refundability of the unflown portion and eligible same-day confirmed changes.

For a traveler weighing a fare or paid cabin upgrade against the chance of a complimentary one, compare the full price and the benefits actually attached to the ticket—not just the possibility of clearing. Relevant factors include the cabin purchased, route eligibility, mileage earning, change and refund terms, status priority, and how much the trip depends on the upgrade clearing. A complimentary upgrade is conditional, so it should not be treated as a substitute for buying the cabin you need.
Why Delta is emphasizing premium revenue
There is a real commercial backdrop to frustration over upgrades. In its 2025 proxy statement filed with the SEC, Delta reported $63.4 billion in total revenue for 2025 and described its results as reflecting the strength of a diversified, premium-focused commercial engine. It also reported $5 billion in pretax income, $8.3 billion in operating cash flow and record free cash flow of $4.6 billion. These are company-wide figures, not measurements of premium-cabin revenue or complimentary upgrades. Delta’s 2025 proxy statement provides the company’s figures and characterization.

The Associated Press has described Delta’s use of pricing tools beginning in the early 2010s to offer more first-class seats to coach customers willing to pay more. AP quoted then-Delta President Glen Hauenstein saying premium products, once “loss leaders,” had become “the highest-margin products.” That is historical context for the airline’s commercial strategy, not a current upgrade-policy announcement or proof of a measured decline in complimentary upgrades. The AP report contains the interview and context.
Delta’s June 2025 results release likewise presented its new fare experiences as a way to tailor products to customer budgets and priorities; flights under those experiences were announced to begin October 1. Product packaging supports a strategy of differentiating what customers buy, but it does not mean complimentary upgrades were discontinued. Delta’s June 2025 release gives that announcement.

Upgrade certificates are another conditional option
Eligible members may also have access to upgrade certificates, but a certificate is not a guaranteed seat. Delta’s published terms specify eligible fare classes and carriers, require upgrade space, and allow waitlisting in some circumstances. Certificate holders may need to contact Delta to book, and availability can vary by flight and market. Check the certificate terms and upgrade rules for the applicable itinerary before relying on a certificate.
