Delta did not bring the Boeing 747 back to passenger service. Its May 2026 announcement was about applying FlightFilm, a shark-skin-inspired coating, to a retired 747 at the Delta Flight Museum in Atlanta for installation testing. Delta says the coating has the potential to improve fuel efficiency by up to 4%; that figure is a potential benefit, not a reported result from the museum aircraft.
What Delta is doing with the 747
Delta said it would partner with MAKO to apply FlightFilm to the exterior of a retired museum 747. The project is an installation test of the coating on a large aircraft, not a plan to return the museum plane to airline operations. Delta’s announcement does not report a measured fuel or emissions result from this installation test.
How FlightFilm is meant to work
FlightFilm uses microscopic riblet patterns inspired by shark skin. Delta describes the surface as helping smooth airflow and reduce drag. The company says the coating could improve fuel efficiency by up to 4%, but it presents that as potential, not as a result demonstrated by this particular 747 test. Delta’s May 2026 announcement quotes Chief Sustainability Officer Amelia DeLuca describing sustainability as a mindset applied across the operation.
Why the phrase “brought back” is confusing
The phrase can refer to two different events: Delta’s 747s returned to its operating fleet through the 2008 Northwest merger, while the 2026 announcement concerns a retired aircraft being used for a museum installation test. Delta began 747 service in 1970, and retired the fleet in 2017.

The Delta Flight Museum’s 747 history says the airline’s first 747s proved too large for its routes; Delta began trading them back to Boeing in 1974, and the last of those original aircraft flew in 1977. The museum says the Northwest merger later added 747-400s, 747-200s and 747-200 freighters to Delta’s fleet.
The museum aircraft’s role
The museum’s 747-400, Ship 6301, was the first 747-400 built. It entered Delta’s fleet through the Northwest merger and made its final flight in September 2015. The aircraft opened as the 747 Experience in 2017, allowing visitors to explore its upper deck and learn about its history. The museum’s aircraft page documents that exhibit history. The 2026 coating project adds a testing role to the aircraft’s museum use; it does not reverse its retirement.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established: Delta named MAKO as its partner and FlightFilm as the coating to be applied to the retired museum 747 for installation testing.
- Delta’s stated potential: FlightFilm could improve fuel efficiency by up to 4%.
- Not established by the announcement: a measured efficiency gain, emissions reduction, completed test outcome, or decision to apply the coating across Delta’s operating fleet.
- Fleet status: Delta retired its 747 fleet in 2017; the 2026 project does not mean the airline resumed scheduled 747 flights.
Delta’s corporate history also places the start of its 747 service in 1970.
