Delta has described the order as part of a plan to renew its widebody fleet and support international growth. Its public announcements do not give a complete historical explanation for why it had not selected the 787 earlier.
Delta has ordered the 787, but service is years away
Delta announced its first 787 order in January 2026: 30 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, plus options for 30 additional aircraft. The airline identifies the 787 as a new fleet type. Its financial results schedule deliveries to begin in 2031, so the order does not mean Delta is flying the aircraft now. Delta’s January 2026 announcement and financial results provide the order and timing.
Why is Delta adding the 787?
Delta presents the order as part of a broader fleet plan: replacing older, less efficient aircraft, supporting international growth, improving operations, and building scale across its widebody fleet. CEO Ed Bastian said the airline was “building the fleet for the future, enhancing the customer experience, driving operational improvements and providing steady replacements for less efficient, older aircraft in the decade to come.” That is Delta’s corporate explanation, not an independent assessment of the aircraft’s economics. Delta’s order announcement sets out the company’s stated rationale.
Routes Delta identifies for the 787-10
Delta’s media kit says it expects to use the 787-10 on transatlantic and South American routes. The airline also says the aircraft offers 25% better fuel efficiency per seat than the previous-generation widebody aircraft it will replace. That percentage is Delta’s comparison; the media kit does not establish it as an independent, like-for-like operating result. Delta’s fleet overview describes the intended markets and efficiency claim.

The 787 is one part of a wider widebody order
Delta also announced orders for 16 Airbus A330-900s and 15 A350-900s. Deliveries of those 31 Airbus aircraft are expected to begin in 2029, ahead of the 787 deliveries scheduled for 2031. Delta’s long-haul plans therefore include both Airbus aircraft and the future Boeing 787. Delta’s announcement gives the Airbus quantities and timing.
The announcements do not provide a complete, independent, like-for-like comparison of the aircraft’s operating costs, capacity, or cabin strategies. They identify intended route context for the 787 and broad fleet-planning reasons for the orders, rather than a detailed explanation of how Delta will allocate every aircraft.

Why didn’t Delta choose the 787 sooner?
The official material cited here does not fully explain why Delta did not order or operate the 787 before 2026. Delta’s current reasons for adding the aircraft—fleet renewal, international growth, and operating improvements—should not be treated as proof of why it made earlier fleet decisions. Specific claims about past negotiations, aircraft economics, or fleet commonality are not established by these announcements.
