The coverage describes a moment in time—not evidence that Costco shoppers are currently lining up nationwide or that every warehouse had the same shortage.
What was reported at Costco?
On February 3, 2025, Fortune reported that Costco customers were waiting in long lines and buying eggs, citing social-media posts. One TikTok user quoted in the report wrote: “If you want to get eggs from Costco, get there before it opens. I got here at 9 a.m. The line just keeps getting longer.” That is an account quoted by Fortune, not independent confirmation of conditions at every Costco location.
Fortune linked the rush to avian-influenza-related supply constraints as well as tariff-related buying concerns. Those are factors described in the report, not proof that tariffs alone caused the queues. Fortune said Costco had not immediately responded to its request for comment.
Why were eggs hard to find?
Bird flu disrupted egg production
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) led to large poultry losses, mostly among egg-laying birds. The Associated Press reported that nearly 158 million birds had been slaughtered overall since the outbreak began in 2022. In the month before its February 2025 report, more than 23 million birds were killed, following 18 million in December.

Flock recovery takes time
A supply disruption can continue after an outbreak event because farms need to replace culled flocks and sanitize barns. AP said those steps can take at least a month or two, meaning fewer laying birds can keep affecting the egg supply while production recovers.
Shoppers reacted to scarcity concerns
When shoppers hear that a staple may be scarce, some may buy earlier or seek out stores believed to have stock. Fortune described tariff concerns as another part of the February 2025 buying rush, alongside the supply constraints. The reporting does not establish how much either factor contributed to the lines.

How did shortages affect prices and store policies?
The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service’s February 28, 2025 Egg Markets Overview described inadequate supplies following HPAI-related production impacts. It estimated total table egg production was down 6% year over year, an 8.5 million-case deficit. For the week of February 28, the national wholesale price for large, white, conventional shell eggs delivered to retailers was $8.53 per dozen. That is a dated wholesale figure, not a Costco retail price.
USDA said grocers were using several measures to stretch available supplies:

Did Costco have a nationwide egg limit?
The cited coverage does not establish a single, stable nationwide Costco purchase limit. AP reported that limits varied among retailers and that not all reported restrictions applied nationwide. Limits, stock, carton sizes and promotions can differ by chain, location and date; a report about one store or retailer should not be read as a universal policy.

No. The lines in the headline refer to reporting from February 2025 and do not establish current conditions. USDA Economic Research Service projections published August 21, 2025 put U.S. per-capita table-egg availability at 21.5 dozen in 2025 and 22.9 dozen in 2026. Those are annual national projections, not measurements of Costco inventory or a particular warehouse’s stock.

Costco Business Center lists a 15-dozen product of large USDA Grade A whole eggs, but its listing says availability and price can change. It is a business-delivery product listing, not confirmation of current stock at a local Costco warehouse. For a specific store, use Costco’s current local inventory information or contact the warehouse rather than relying on national projections or an older report.
