The moves were small: at 1158 GMT, corn was down 0.4%, while wheat and soybeans were each up 0.1%. The figures are a dated intraday snapshot, not current prices or closing quotes.
What moved in the September 8 trading snapshot?
| Grain | Move | Price per bushel | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corn | Down 0.4% | $4.16¼ | 1158 GMT, September 8, 2025 |
| Wheat | Up 0.1% | $5.20½ | 1158 GMT, September 8, 2025 |
| Soybeans | Up 0.1% | $10.28¼ | 1158 GMT, September 8, 2025 |
Reuters reported the quotes in its September 8 account, republished by Successful Farming. They describe the most-active Chicago futures contracts at that time, not a later settlement.
Why were corn futures lower?
The main pressure was traders’ expectation that USDA would confirm a record U.S. harvest. A larger expected crop generally means more supply, which can weigh on futures. The agency’s reports, including estimates for U.S. corn and soybean harvests, were expected on Friday, September 12, 2025.
That expectation was not certain. StoneX commodity risk manager Matt Ammermann said August dryness might mean the corn crop would be smaller than earlier forecasts, while still likely to be a record. Reuters also reported disagreement among private forecasters: S&P Global expected corn and soybean production above USDA’s August outlook, while other private estimates were lower. The competing estimates added uncertainty to the outlook rather than establishing the eventual crop size.

Why were soybeans and wheat slightly higher?
Soybeans: possible yield caution, but demand concerns
Some traders believed USDA might be less optimistic about U.S. soybean yields than it had been previously, a view that could support prices. Ammermann said soybeans were supported by that belief. But the report also identified a lack of Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans and no substantive news from U.S.-China trade talks as bearish considerations.
Wheat: currency support amid ample supply
A softer U.S. dollar helped support grains by making U.S. supplies less expensive for overseas buyers. That factor offered wheat support, but the broader supply picture remained weak: Ammermann described the wheat market as bearish because export markets had plentiful supply. Reuters also reported moderately declining Black Sea cash-wheat prices, especially Russian prices, and said farmers were dissatisfied with low prices.

How to read the mixed signals
The moves show why a small daily rise is not the same as a broadly bullish market outlook. In this account, corn faced the prospect of abundant supply; soybeans had a possible yield-related support but also weak Chinese buying; and wheat benefited from currency conditions despite ample export availability. The weaker dollar was a shared supportive factor, not proof that it alone caused any grain’s move. These are the factors and trader positioning Reuters reported, not evidence that any single one caused the price changes.
The article was a preview of USDA estimates expected September 12, 2025. It does not establish what those reports ultimately showed, how markets reacted afterward, or prices and crop estimates as of October 8, 2026.
