Copper prices reached record levels in 2026 because mine and copper-concentrate supply tightened just as tariff expectations pulled metal into U.S. warehouses. Longer-term expectations for electrification and AI infrastructure also supported prices, but this was not simply a case of worldwide demand overwhelming supply: regional inventories and trade flows helped drive the market.
What “record high” means for copper
A copper record needs a benchmark, contract, date, unit and price basis. The London Metal Exchange (LME), COMEX and Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) are separate markets; their prices use different currencies and units and can diverge as tariffs and logistics shift where metal is available. An intraday high is also not the same as a settlement price.
| Benchmark and contract | Reported record | Date and basis |
|---|---|---|
| LME copper | Above US$14,500 per tonne | Briefly exceeded intraday in January 2026, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). |
| LME three-month copper | US$14,875 per tonne | Intraday record in September 2026, according to LME Insight. |
| COMEX copper | About US$15,100 per tonne | Record early in October 2026, as reported in the International Copper Association Australia’s weekly brief for the week ending 2 October 2026. |
| LME copper | US$14,875 per tonne | Early-October 2026 record cited in the same association brief; it does not specify a contract tenor or price basis for this figure. |
These are dated reports from different venues, not interchangeable global quotes. LME prices are quoted in U.S. dollars per tonne, COMEX in dollars per pound, and SHFE in yuan. To compare a live quote with any record, check the exchange, contract, currency, unit, date, and whether the figure is intraday or a settlement. The figures above do not establish the latest market price.
Why copper prices rose
Tariff expectations redirected inventories
Expectations of U.S. tariffs encouraged copper to move into U.S. warehouses. That shift could leave less metal readily available to buyers elsewhere and widen regional price differences. Reuters reporting summarized by Investing.com said the resulting price pressure could push benchmarks toward records even without a global shortage. That makes tariff-related flows an important short-term market disruption, not proof that every region had the same physical supply problem. Reuters reporting via Investing.com

The scale of U.S. imports illustrates the shift: Reuters reported via Investing.com that the United States imported almost 885,000 tonnes of refined copper cathodes in the first half of 2026. That was about 3% more than in the first half of 2025 and more than twice the first-half 2024 amount. Those are import figures for a specific product and period, not a measure of total global copper consumption.
Mine and concentrate supply was constrained
Disruptions at major mines and difficulties developing new mines limited supply, according to the IEA. LME Insight, citing preliminary International Copper Study Group data, reported that global mine production fell 1.1% and concentrate output fell 2.6% in the first half of 2026. These figures cover that six-month period and are preliminary, rather than a final measure for the full year.

Concentrate is mined copper material that must be processed before it becomes refined metal. LME Insight described zero-to-negative treatment and refining charges as evidence of scarce concentrate. These charges are paid in the upstream processing market; they signal tightness for smelters, but are not the price a consumer pays for copper.
Long-term demand expectations provided additional support
Electrification and AI-related infrastructure—including electricity grids and data centres—are expected to require copper, according to the IEA and LME Insight. These longer-term expectations helped support the market, but they are distinct from the near-term effects of mine disruptions and tariff-driven inventory movements. They should not be read as proof that future demand alone caused the 2026 records.

Why copper prices can differ by region
Exchange prices reflect distinct contracts and market locations, while warehouse stocks show where metal is stored—not necessarily how much is available to buyers everywhere. When tariffs, shipping and regional demand change where copper is held, one benchmark can rise more sharply than another. Nearby premiums can also signal that buyers value prompt delivery, but do not by themselves establish a worldwide shortage.
For a meaningful comparison, identify the exchange and contract, convert currency and units, use the same date, and distinguish intraday highs from settlements. A record in one benchmark does not automatically mean that every buyer faced the same price or local supply conditions.

What the record does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you a named benchmark crossed its earlier high. The claim is only meaningful when tied to a venue, contract, date, unit and price basis.
- It reflects both supply and location. Mine and concentrate constraints mattered, while tariff expectations shifted inventories toward the United States and changed availability elsewhere.
- It is not a universal global price. LME, COMEX and SHFE prices can differ, and warehouse inventories are geographically located.
- It does not establish a single cause. Structural demand expectations added support, but short-term trade flows and supply disruptions were also important.
