Arum Kang said she turned down Mark Cuban’s reported $30 million offer for Coffee Meets Bagel because she believed the startup had far more room to grow—and that selling at that point would be much too early. In a 2019 interview with GeekWire, she described the opportunity as both financial and social: the company could grow with the dating market and create meaningful connections for users.
Why Kang said she rejected the $30 million offer
GeekWire’s April 3, 2019 Numbers Geek interview asked Kang what $30 million meant to her. She said it “means nothing to us” because she and her co-founders saw “so much bigger opportunity” in the dating market and in the impact the company could make. In her view, selling then would have been “way, way, way too early” and would have meant “short selling ourselves.”
That was Kang’s judgment about Coffee Meets Bagel’s prospects, not an independently established valuation conclusion. She was weighing the offer against what she believed the company could build, rather than treating the headline amount as decisive.
What the offer does—and does not—establish
GeekWire described Cuban’s offer as a reported $30 million acquisition offer on Shark Tank and the largest offer in the show’s history at that time. Kang recalled that Cuban was initially “out” before returning to the deal discussion. She said filming lasted about an hour and was edited to roughly ten minutes; she believed Cuban was serious because he seemed knowledgeable about the industry and asked good questions. That remains her assessment, not confirmation from Cuban.

The published interview does not provide a contract, complete offer terms, contingencies, or independent evidence that the offer was binding. The careful description is that Kang said she turned down Cuban’s reported offer on the show—not that the sisters rejected a completed or signed acquisition agreement.
Why the company’s mission mattered to the decision
Kang described Coffee Meets Bagel’s goal as creating quality, authentic connections rather than maximizing superficial user totals. She told GeekWire, “For us, it’s really how many authentic connections are we creating for our customers.” The company’s approach, as she described it in 2019, included tracking average connections per active user per day, messages exchanged by active users, and successful couples generated per day. She said those measures were not public.

Kang also described an aspiration for the average customer to go on about three dates a month through the service. These were statements about the company’s priorities and target experience in the 2019 interview, not independently verified operating results.
What happened after the decision
Kang said she felt good about the decision after Coffee Meets Bagel raised its next round. GeekWire reported that the company had raised a $12 million Series B earlier in 2019 and about $20 million in total at the time of the interview. Kang did not disclose the company’s valuation. Those figures describe the company as reported in 2019; they are not current financial information.

The interview identifies Arum, Soo, and Dawoon Kang as the three co-founders. It describes Soo as a designer and creative force, Dawoon as having a finance and strategy background, and Arum as having a product background. Arum and Dawoon were co-CEOs when GeekWire published the interview.

The decision illustrates why an acquisition offer cannot be evaluated by its headline amount alone. A founder may compare it with the business’s expected future opportunity, its mission, and the consequences of selling at that stage. But the available account does not establish the offer’s full structure or what Coffee Meets Bagel was worth then or later, so it cannot support a numerical comparison between the offer and the company’s eventual value.
