Why Class 8 Combines Still Dominate the Used Market

Class 8 combines remain common used-market listings because more farms can use them than Class 9-plus machines. But abundant inventory does not guarantee strong prices.

Class 8 combines remain common in used listings because they fit a broader range of potential buyers than Class 9-and-larger machines. But their prominence is not proof of strong prices: 2025 platform data showed substantial supply alongside evidence of soft values and slow sales. The figures below are dated snapshots from specific commercial platforms, not a census of every used-combine sale.

Why are Class 8 combines so common on the used market?

The short answer is buyer depth. Andy Campbell, director of insights at Tractor Zoom, said Class 8 machines have more potential second- and third-time buyers than Class 9-plus combines. Larger operations may be able to use the biggest machines, but fewer farms can absorb them as used equipment. Road, bridge, and transport constraints can also make larger combines harder to move.

Class 8 is also a high-volume category. Iron Solutions attributed the class’s inventory prominence partly to it being the most-produced combine class. It also reported that some farmers traded two Class 8 machines for one Class 10, a shift that can put more used Class 8s on the market even as some buyers move up in capacity. The result is a class that can dominate listings while still taking time to sell.

What did the 2025 market figures show?

These figures come from separate platform datasets and sales samples, so they describe their respective coverage rather than the entire U.S. market.

Sandhills Global reported that roughly half of used combines on its platforms were zero to five years old in July 2025. That finding and its approximately 60% Class 8-or-larger share describe the platform inventory, not all combines available or sold nationally.

Does a large share of listings mean Class 8 prices are strong?

No. A category can be prominent because many machines were produced and offered for sale, without every machine attracting strong bids. Iron Solutions described Class 8 combines as difficult for dealers to move in January and February 2025 and reported average sale prices at about 90% of advertised prices in its January report. That is a dated report-specific average, not a universal discount or a prediction for a particular negotiation.

Other 2025 indicators measured different things. A September 2025 Successful Farming article described excess used supply following late deliveries of new equipment in 2023, with demand not sufficient to absorb all available machines. Ziegler Ag’s used-equipment general manager said price erosion over the prior 12–18 months had flattened, while noting that used values remained weak compared with new-equipment prices.

  • It represents the top model in terms of performance and equipment among the T series of John Deere combine harvesters.
  • The toy features Ackerman steering with pendulum compensation, providing smooth and realistic driving experience with a red handle for direct steering.
  • The grain tank of the combine harvester has "self-folding" covers that can be opened, and it can be emptied via a drain tube with a manual spindle drive operated by a red handle.

Sandhills’ July 2025 update reported falling inventory and rising aggregate asking and auction values on its platforms, while also cautioning that individual assets were depreciating year over year. These observations need not conflict: aggregate indexes, individual model-year values, and prices for individual machines measure different populations and periods. Rising new-combine manufacturer suggested retail prices can also change comparisons with historical aggregate values. None of these 2025 snapshots establishes market conditions in October 2026.

How much do hours and condition affect a Class 8 combine’s price?

Successful Farming’s summary of Tractor Zoom Pro data reported notable average price declines around 500-, 1,000-, and 1,500-separator-hour thresholds. In the reported averages, prices fell about $100,000 between the 500–1,000 and 1,000–1,500 separator-hour bands, then about $60,000 between the 1,500–2,000-hour bands.

TOMY Big Farm John Deere S690 Combine Harvester Toy - 1:16 Scale
  • Durable construction makes this toy great for both indoor and outdoor play
  • Features lights and sounds, corn and draper head, and removable front outside dual wheels
  • Unload popcorn kernels (not included) from the grain tank through the rotating auger
  • Officially Licensed John Deere Product
  • 3 AAA batteries included so the fun can start right away

Those are differences between averages across the underlying inventory, not a depreciation schedule for a single machine. The data also illustrates why engine hours alone are not enough: the reported low in the model-year 2022–2025 TractorHouse sample was a Case IH 8250 in North Dakota with 2,236 engine hours and 1,056 separator hours, sold for $163,250. The high was a zero-hour Lexion 8600TT in Illinois at $620,250. These individual extremes differ in make, condition, configuration, and sale context; neither is a typical asking price.

What should a buyer compare before making an offer?

  • Separator and engine hours: Check both, and use broad hour-band averages only as context—not as a formula for valuing a particular machine.
  • Maintenance and condition: When there is a wide supply of options, assess service history and inspect the machine carefully. Cleaner, lower-hour, better-maintained examples may justify closer consideration.
  • Model and configuration: A market average spans different makes, configurations, locations, and hours. Compare machines with genuinely similar specifications and sale circumstances.
  • Asking price versus sale evidence: Dealer advertisements and auction results are different measures. The January 2025 Iron Solutions figure of about 90% of advertised prices can inform context, but it does not dictate an offer on a specific combine.
  • Net trade-in cost: Compare the full deal, including the value lost on your outgoing machine, rather than evaluating only the replacement combine’s price.
  • Farm fit and transport: Estimate whether added capacity will be used and whether roads, bridges, and transport arrangements can accommodate a larger class before moving up.

When might used-combine buying be more active?

In a September 2025 article, Tractor Zoom’s Campbell said August typically had the highest combine-sale volume, followed by December and March. He described preharvest as historically a favorable buying window and said December could bring a premium tied to tax incentives. Those are seasonal observations, not a promise about prices or availability in a particular year or region. A busy selling period can offer more listings, but it can also mean more competition; buyers should weigh the specific machine and terms rather than assume the calendar guarantees a bargain.
