Why China Is Buying U.S. Soybeans While Relying on South America

China’s soybean buying is split: USDA reports continued SOE purchases from the United States, while commercial buyers rely on South America amid a U.S. tariff. Record Brazil shipments are not evidence of a confirmed shortage.

China’s soybean buying is split by buyer type. As of August 13, 2026, China had booked 5.7 million metric tons of U.S. new-crop soybeans for delivery in marketing year 2026/27, while USDA says commercial buyers have relied on South American origins in response to a 10 percent retaliatory tariff on U.S. soybeans. Brazil sent record volumes to China from June through August 2026. That record does not, by itself, establish a Brazilian crop shortfall or supply failure.

What China’s latest U.S. soybean purchases show

The U.S. figure is a sales snapshot, not a tally of soybeans already delivered. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s September 4, 2026 China: Oilseeds and Products Update reported that, as of August 13, China had purchased 5.7 million metric tons of U.S. new-crop soybeans for delivery in marketing year 2026/27.

The report also recorded 3.8 million metric tons sold to “Unknown Destinations.” USDA says such sales can indicate purchases by Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), but the category does not identify the buyer. Those sales should not be added to China’s confirmed purchases as if their destination were established.

Two buyer channels, not one national buying decision

USDA says Chinese SOEs continue purchasing U.S. soybeans in accordance with the Busan agreement. Separately, it says the 10 percent retaliatory tariff on U.S. soybeans has led commercial buyers to rely on South American origins. The two patterns can coexist: reported state-linked buying from the United States alongside commercial sourcing from South America.

What “Brazil supply uncertainty” does—and does not—mean

The USDA update reports record Brazilian soybean volumes shipped to China from June through August 2026, but its summary does not give a tonnage for that record. It also does not document a specific Brazilian production loss, weather disruption, logistics failure, or supply gap. The evidence supports describing uncertainty as a market concern or context, not as a confirmed shortage.

That distinction matters for interpreting the U.S. bookings. A buyer may diversify suppliers or secure future cargoes because of tariff exposure, seasonal availability, or uncertainty about future costs. Such activity does not prove that Brazil is unable to meet demand now.

How the U.S. and Brazil fit into China’s sourcing choices

China’s sourcing choices depend on more than the origin-country price. Tariff treatment, the timing of harvests and shipments, production costs, inland transport, port access, ocean freight, and the buyer’s identity all affect the economics. USDA’s cited material discusses these factors historically but does not provide a current delivered-price comparison for U.S. and Brazilian soybeans in China.

Factor United States Brazil
Buyer pattern described by USDA in September 2026 SOEs continue buying under the Busan agreement; 5.7 million metric tons of new-crop purchases for 2026/27 delivery were reported as of August 13. Commercial buyers have relied on South American origins amid the U.S. tariff; Brazil sent record volumes to China in June–August 2026.
Tariff exposure in the report A 10 percent retaliatory tariff on U.S. soybeans is reported. The report links the tariff to commercial reliance on South American origins; it does not state a comparable Brazil tariff rate.
Current delivered price to China Not stated in the USDA September 4, 2026 update. Not stated in the USDA September 4, 2026 update.
Brazil shipment volume in June–August 2026 Not applicable to U.S. origin. Described as a record by USDA, but a tonnage is not stated in the report summary.

Consequently, the available figures do not show whether either origin was cheaper on a delivered basis. A tariff can change the relative economics for commercial importers, but the actual comparison also depends on freight, timing, and contract terms.

Why seasonality and trade concentration matter

Historical trade data help explain why changes in Chinese buying attract attention, but they are not current market shares. USDA Economic Research Service’s 2019 analysis reported that in marketing year 2016/17 China accounted for 65 percent of global soybean imports, while the United States and Brazil together supplied 83 percent of world exports.

The same ERS analysis described seasonal differences using average monthly distributions across China marketing years 2006–16: more than 20 percent of U.S. soybean imports arrived in December, while 17 percent of Brazilian imports arrived in June. These are historical averages, not a schedule for 2026 shipments. Seasonal sourcing can affect when each origin is available, but the old averages cannot establish current shipment timing or supply capacity.

A precedent for large-scale substitution

After China’s 2018 tariff, Brazil was the only exporter able to supply China with large replacement volumes, according to USDA ERS. Brazilian soybean exports to China rose by 11.5 million metric tons in October 2018–March 2019 compared with the same period a year earlier. This example shows that sourcing can shift substantially, but it is not proof of Brazil’s current capacity or of a present-day shortage.

Other China soybean figures in USDA’s update

China’s domestic soybean production forecast for marketing year 2026/27 was lowered slightly to 20.1 million metric tons because of smaller planted area. That is a China production estimate, not an estimate of Brazil’s crop.

Outsidepride Soybean Seeds - 5 lbs High-Protein & High Yield Heirloom Variety Soy Beans, Ideal for Oil Processing, Forage, Animal Food Plots, & Wildlife Feed for Poultry & Other Farm Animals
  • HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
  • RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
  • OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
  • HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

USDA also said China’s soybean oil exports could reach a record 1 million metric tons in marketing year 2025/26 as crushing for meal grows and demand for soybean oil cools. This adds downstream processing context, but it does not establish a Brazilian supply constraint.

How to read the numbers as a market watcher

  • Keep bookings separate from arrivals. The 5.7-million-metric-ton figure is for purchases booked as of August 13 for 2026/27 delivery, not proof that the cargoes had arrived.
  • Keep unknown destinations unassigned. USDA says the 3.8 million metric tons sold to unknown destinations can indicate SOE purchases; it is not confirmed China-bound volume.
  • Separate buyer behavior from crop conditions. The report supports a tariff-linked commercial shift toward South America and ongoing SOE U.S. buying. It does not establish a Brazilian production or supply failure.
  • Check dates and data series. USDA ERS says its trade tables are updated monthly. Its September 8, 2026 page listed October 9 as the next update, so later shipment data may change the picture beyond the August snapshot.
