Charlie Methven said he left Charlton Athletic to take a new job as managing director of Mount Pleasant Football Academy in Jamaica. He had already stepped down as Charlton’s chief executive in March 2025; he later said he had also ended his shareholding and all other involvement with the club. Separately, a 2026 report described early interest from a Methven-linked group in Sheffield Wednesday, but said it did not reach the final bidding stage. The available reporting does not connect that interest to his Charlton exit.
Why did Charlie Methven leave Charlton Athletic?
Methven’s stated reason for ending his Charlton involvement was a new professional role in Jamaica. In a post announcing the move, he said he was becoming managing director of Mount Pleasant Football Academy and described it as “a fantastic challenge which I cannot wait to get started on.” He said he was ceasing to be a Charlton shareholder as well as leaving his role at the club. Why he took the executive job
When discussing his CEO departure in March 2025, Methven said he had not originally intended to take an executive role. He said he agreed to move to south-east London and help drive progress because things at Charlton “were not progressing fast enough for all our liking.” He added that the club was then on an upward trajectory and that it was time for him to leave the owners and board time to appoint a successor. That explanation concerns why he took on executive duties at Charlton and why he stepped down as CEO. His later move to Jamaica is the reason he gave for ending his remaining involvement.

A March 2026 local report said a Methven-linked consortium showed early interest in Sheffield Wednesday after the club entered administration. The report said the group was not among the three parties that reached the final bidding process. It does not establish that the consortium made a formal bid, and it does not identify the investors. South London Sport: Charlton Athletic Edition
The same report relayed an unnamed source close to the bid team saying investors were concerned that time was short and due diligence was incomplete. That is the source’s reported account of why the group may not have progressed, not a statement by Methven.
Was Sheffield Wednesday interest why he left Charlton?
No available reporting establishes that connection. Methven’s stated reason for leaving Charlton was the Mount Pleasant role; the Wednesday story is a separate report about early consortium interest. The timing and wording of a headline should not be taken as evidence that one caused the other.
