#BoycottMakeMyTrip trended in India after MakeMyTrip co-founder and strategic adviser Keyur Joshi posted tweets about beef and freedom of food choice on May 31, 2017. Joshi later apologised and withdrew his comments; MakeMyTrip said they were his personal views and that he was not a current employee. Contemporary reports documented boycott calls and app-related posts, but did not establish a measurable business impact.

What did Keyur Joshi tweet about beef?

On Wednesday, May 31, 2017, amid debate over restrictions on cattle sales for slaughter, Joshi posted two tweets about food choice and religion. The Indian Express reported that he later deleted both tweets and his Twitter account. The wording below was reproduced by Alt News; the original posts were reported as deleted.

“#Beefban I am a strong supporter of @narendramodi & a vegetarian for life. But I will now eat beef only in India to support freedom for food.”

“#Beefban if Hinduism takes away right to choice of food, I rather not be a Hindu. @narendramodi @BJP4India cannot decide what people eat”

NDTV placed the remarks in the context of the Centre’s restrictions on the sale of cattle for slaughter and reported that Joshi had helped found MakeMyTrip in 2000.

Why did #BoycottMakeMyTrip trend?

Users reacted to the tweets by calling for a boycott of the travel-booking company. The Indian Express reported that #BoycottMakeMyTrip trended for a time and described posts urging people to uninstall the app or give it the lowest possible rating. It also reported screenshots of uninstalls, one-star ratings and negative reviews.

Alt News documented calls for app uninstalls, lower ratings, ticket cancellations and a business boycott. It characterized the activity as a coordinated attack; that was the outlet’s analysis, not a verified measure of how many people took part. NDTV also reported supportive as well as critical reactions to Joshi’s remarks.

What were Joshi’s apology and MakeMyTrip’s response?

Joshi apologised and withdrew the comments

The Indian Express reproduced Joshi’s apology: “The views expressed in my tweets regarding #beefban were my personal thoughts only, I deeply regret any unintentional inconvenience or hurt cause to anybody. I sincerely apologize for this and withdraw my comments unconditionally.” The report said he deleted his Twitter account afterward.

MakeMyTrip said the views were personal

MakeMyTrip’s statement, reproduced by The Indian Express and NDTV, said: “The views expressed by Mr Joshi on Twitter are his personal thoughts & do not reflect the views of MMT. He is not a current employee of MMT.”

There was also a question at the time about Joshi’s association with the company. NDTV reported that people pointed to his listing as a board director on MakeMyTrip’s website, while Alt News described him as appearing under “Board Directors and Advisors.” Those reports describe a contemporaneous website listing; they do not establish his current role.

Did the boycott cause measurable financial damage?

The contemporaneous reports reviewed documented boycott calls, screenshots and app ratings or reviews, but did not provide a verified aggregate number of participants, uninstalls, rating changes, lost customers or revenue effects. Posts and screenshots show that some users publicly acted or said they would act; they are not evidence of the campaign’s overall scale or financial impact.
