It showed a sharp burst of interest in avoiding U.S.-linked products—not proof that Denmark had broadly stopped buying American goods.
What happened in Denmark’s App Store?
TechCrunch reported the rankings on January 21, 2026, attributing download and chart data to mobile-app intelligence firm Appfigures. NonUSA was No. 6 on the Tuesday before the report and No. 1 on Wednesday, January 21. Made O’Meter was No. 5 on the Danish App Store at the time. These are historical chart positions, not evidence that either app remains highly ranked today. TechCrunch’s January 21 report said Apple’s Danish storefront also serves Greenland, and described the same regional treatment for Google Play.
Why did the apps surge?
The immediate backdrop was President Donald Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. TechCrunch described a grassroots response in which some Danish consumers reconsidered U.S.-made products, trips to the United States, and subscriptions to U.S.-based services such as Netflix. The report does not describe a formally coordinated government campaign, nor does it establish that the apps caused the wider consumer reaction.
What do NonUSA and Made O’Meter do?
Both apps help users look for product-origin information and alternatives. According to TechCrunch, NonUSA lets a user scan a barcode, displays information about a product’s origin, and suggests Danish alternatives where possible. Made O’Meter offers a similar function. NonUSA was described as an iPhone app; Made O’Meter was reported to be available on iOS and Android. A Made O’Meter Apple App Store listing was identified in syndicated coverage. Availability can vary by storefront, so a U.S. listing alone does not establish availability in Denmark or Greenland.

“American” can mean several different things
A product’s country of manufacture is not necessarily the same as its brand’s nationality, parent-company ownership, or headquarters. Nor does any one of those facts show where all profits flow or where a company employs people. For example, a U.S.-owned company may manufacture a product in Denmark, while a Danish brand may be owned by an international conglomerate.
A barcode can help an app look up a product in its database, but it does not by itself establish the complete ownership structure or supply chain. The TechCrunch report describes the apps’ functions; it does not provide a product-by-product accuracy test. Treat a scan as a lead to check, not a definitive ruling on whether an item is American.

What the download figures do—and do not—show
Across NonUSA on iOS, Made O’Meter on iOS, and Made O’Meter on Google Play, average daily downloads rose 867% in the seven days before the report compared with the preceding week, according to Appfigures as reported by TechCrunch. That is roughly 9.7 times the earlier average. It is a relative increase across those app and platform combinations, not a count of 867% of Denmark’s population, nor evidence of millions of downloads.
Market size matters. Appfigures estimated that Denmark’s iOS App Store handled about 200,000 downloads per day across all apps. In a market of that scale, a few thousand downloads can help push an app high in a chart. A No. 1 position is a ranking against other apps at a moment in time; it does not disclose the app’s exact user count, show how long the position lasted, or reveal whether users changed their purchasing habits.

Was the interest limited to Denmark?
TechCrunch said Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland were among NonUSA’s top five markets. That points to interest in other Nordic countries, but the report does not measure how many people in each country joined a boycott or whether participation was equally strong across the region.
Why scanning an item is not the same as measuring a boycott
Product databases and corporate structures make country-of-origin choices less straightforward than a barcode scan may suggest. A product can be recognized while its classification remains debatable: it may be manufactured in one country, sold under a brand from another, and owned by a parent company headquartered somewhere else. Databases can also lag behind acquisitions or changes to manufacturing locations.

Coverage can vary for private-label goods, imported products, produce, alcohol, cosmetics, and regional items. A suggested substitute may be unavailable locally, or “Danish” may refer to the brand’s ownership rather than where the product is made. Price, ingredients, employment, and environmental impact are separate considerations that a country label alone cannot resolve.
- If a product is not recognized, the app cannot tell you whether it fits your criteria.
- If it is recognized but the country label is ambiguous, check the manufacturer, brand owner, and production information separately.
- If a product recently changed ownership, a database may not yet reflect the change.
- If you install a scanning app, review its current privacy label and developer privacy policy for information about scan history, location, device identifiers, and analytics.
The charts do not show a wholesale rejection of U.S. technology
U.S.-based apps including Shop, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Authenticator continued to appear in Denmark’s top charts, according to Yahoo’s syndicated coverage. That complicates any claim that Danish consumers rejected American products across the board. People may avoid some discretionary goods while continuing to use software that is familiar, essential, or difficult to replace. A download spike for boycott tools measures attention to those apps, not the scale or economic effect of a consumer boycott.
