Trading activity, liquidity, news, adoption, economic conditions, and sentiment all shape those decisions. Bitcoin’s supply schedule is programmed, but its market price is not; neither a halving nor any other single factor guarantees what the price will do next.
Why does the price of Bitcoin fluctuate?
Bitcoin has no central authority that sets its market price. Prices emerge from trading: buyers place bids, sellers make offers, and transactions occur when those interests meet. As participants react to new information and revise their expectations, the balance between buying and selling changes.
Bitcoin.org describes supply and demand as the basis for price movements and notes that relatively small events, trades, or business activity can significantly affect price in a comparatively small market. That is a framework for understanding how prices can move, not proof that any one factor caused a particular day’s rise or fall.
News, adoption, economic conditions, and sentiment
News, adoption, and economic conditions can affect how market participants assess Bitcoin’s potential demand, risks, or trading environment. Confidence, uncertainty, press coverage, and exuberance may also influence those decisions. These factors can interact: a headline may change expectations, but the price response depends on how buyers and sellers act across markets. Bitcoin.org discusses these influences in its price-discovery and sentiment material and FAQ on price and market dynamics.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Programmed supply does not dictate the price
Bitcoin’s protocol caps total issuance at 21 million BTC. The block subsidy is cut in half every 210,000 blocks, approximately every four years. Bitcoin.org lists the fourth halving as April 20, 2024, when the subsidy became 3.125 BTC per block, and estimates the next halving in 2028. The next date depends on future block production.
These rules constrain the rate of new issuance; they do not set demand, establish a fair value, create a price floor, or guarantee an increase. The schedule is a supply fact, not a short-term price law. See Bitcoin.org’s halving schedule.

Why is Bitcoin so volatile?
Volatility describes how much a price moves over a chosen period. Liquidity describes how readily people can trade without substantially changing the market price. The concepts are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Bitcoin.org warns that Bitcoin’s price can increase or decrease unpredictably over a short period, citing its economy, evolving adoption, and sometimes illiquid markets. When a market has limited or uneven depth, a relatively small order or event may have a larger price effect than it would in a deeper market. Trading activity and market conditions therefore help determine how strongly a change in buying or selling interest moves the quoted price.

There is no single volatility figure that explains every timeframe or market. A percentage needs a defined calculation and observation window to be meaningful; without those, calling Bitcoin “volatile” is a qualitative description, not a precise comparison. The explanation of volatility also cannot reliably predict the next move. Bitcoin.org’s risk guidance treats Bitcoin as a high-risk asset and cautions against storing money in it that you cannot afford to lose.
Why is the Bitcoin price different on different exchanges?
Exchanges are independent markets. Each has its own buyers, sellers, bids, offers, trading activity, and liquidity, so the latest transaction on one venue need not match the latest transaction elsewhere. Quotes can also differ because they use different currency pairs or update at different times.

A price displayed by an aggregator may combine observations to provide a broad reference. That figure is not necessarily a price at which you can trade. Bitcoin.org says its displayed price is not an offer to buy or sell and that its data can be delayed; see its Bitcoin price page.
How to compare two quotes
- Venue: Check which exchange or market supplied the quote.
- Currency pair: Confirm whether the quote is BTC against U.S. dollars, euros, or another currency.
- Timestamp and delay: Compare when each figure was updated and whether the data is delayed.
- Quote type: Distinguish an exchange’s market quote from an aggregator’s reference value.
- Liquidity and trading activity: A displayed price alone does not show how much could be traded near that level.
If you need an executable quote, check the relevant venue and trading pair rather than assuming an aggregated reference is available for a transaction. Small differences between services are a normal result of separate markets and data methods.

Is there one official Bitcoin price?
No. Bitcoin.org states, “There is no single official Bitcoin price”. A quote can be useful as a reference, but its meaning depends on the venue, currency, timestamp, and whether it is an aggregated figure or a tradable market quote. The price a person can actually trade at depends on the relevant market and its conditions.
For general education about Bitcoin’s design, Bitcoin.org also provides Satoshi Nakamoto’s original paper. It explains the system, not future price movements or investment outcomes.
