The breach reportedly involved information associated with about nine million wireless accounts. This was a regulatory settlement—not the separate $177 million class-action settlement tied to two other AT&T data incidents.
Why AT&T agreed to the $13 million settlement
Cybernews reported on September 18, 2024, that the FCC announced the settlement the previous day. The investigation concerned customer information stored by a vendor AT&T had hired to create personalized video content, including billing and marketing videos. Cybernews reported that data associated with approximately nine million wireless accounts was involved.
The investigation focused on AT&T’s oversight of the vendor and the protection, retention and disposal of customer data. The vendor contract required data to be deleted or returned when it was no longer needed; the investigation found that AT&T had not ensured the vendor properly protected or disposed of the information. AT&T agreed to strengthen its data-governance practices as part of resolving the investigation. Cybernews’s account of the FCC settlement reports these terms.
The available account does not name the vendor. It also describes a resolution of an investigation, not an adjudication of liability by the FCC.

How this differs from AT&T’s $177 million class settlement
The $177 million figure concerns a different matter: consolidated private class litigation over two AT&T customer-data incidents announced on March 30 and July 12, 2024. Court-filed settlement materials allocated $149 million to the AT&T 1 class and $28 million to the AT&T 2 class.
| Point of comparison | $13 million FCC settlement | $177 million class settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Type of proceeding | FCC Enforcement Bureau investigation, resolved by AT&T’s agreement to pay and improve data governance. | Private class litigation with settlement funds for two classes. |
| Incidents involved | January 2023 vendor-related breach; Cybernews reported information associated with about nine million wireless accounts. | Two incidents announced in 2024, on March 30 and July 12. |
| Amount and structure | $13 million settlement amount reported by Cybernews in 2024. | $177 million total: $149 million for AT&T 1 and $28 million for AT&T 2, according to 2025 court-filed settlement materials. |
| Consumer claims | The available sources do not establish an individual claim process or consumer payment tied to this FCC settlement. | The claim deadline was December 18, 2025; it has passed. |
Can AT&T customers claim part of the $13 million?
The available information does not establish that the FCC settlement created a consumer claims fund or a route for individual customers to receive part of the $13 million. Do not treat it as a payment offer or assume that filing a claim is possible based on the FCC settlement alone.

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The claim process that did exist was for the separate class settlement, and its December 18, 2025 deadline has passed. On October 2, 2026, the Northern District of Texas granted final approval. The court estimated that valid AT&T 2 Tier 3 claimants would receive approximately $6.50 to $7.10; that was an estimate, not a guaranteed amount for any individual. The reported agreement addresses AT&T’s handling of vendor data governance, including protection and disposal practices. It should not be described as a finding that the FCC adjudicated AT&T’s liability. The reported settlement also does not, by itself, establish that an affected customer is entitled to compensation or that a particular consumer remedy was offered.
