For people who cancel Amazon Prime, the clearest reported reason is the membership fee: Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) says almost half of former members in its survey could not or did not want to pay it. That does not mean Amazon customers are abandoning every Amazon service, or that cancellations are surging. The available cancellation-rate estimate is limited to a particular group of U.S. shoppers and a period ending in September 2024.
What does “canceling Amazon” mean?
People often use “Amazon” to mean Prime, the paid membership that bundles shipping benefits with services such as Prime Video. The most directly relevant cancellation data concerns Prime membership. Prime Video viewers may also reconsider the streaming service, but that is a separate question: a person can stop using or paying for a video service without closing an Amazon account or canceling every Amazon product.
The evidence also needs to be separated into three categories: reported reasons for voluntary Prime cancellations, broader reasons people stop streaming, and the Federal Trade Commission’s case about enrollment and cancellation practices. They describe different situations and should not be treated as one cancellation trend.
What is the clearest reason people cancel Prime?
CIRP reported in January 2025 that almost half of former Prime members it surveyed canceled because they could not or did not want to pay the membership fee. The article’s chart does not disclose the exact percentage, so “almost half” is the most precise figure that can be responsibly reported. CIRP’s report does not establish that cost is the reason for every cancellation, but it is the clearest direct evidence here about why former members left.

For a household deciding whether to keep Prime, the practical question is whether the benefits it actually uses justify the recurring fee. Shipping savings matter more to frequent users; video or other membership benefits matter only if they replace spending or services the household would otherwise choose. A benefit that is available but rarely used may not make the membership worthwhile for that customer.
Broader membership research offers context, not a direct explanation of Prime cancellations. In KPMG’s 2025 American Perspectives Survey, respondents said discounts and free or expedited shipping would make a paid membership more appealing. That finding can help explain what people value in memberships, but it is not a survey of Prime cancelers or proof that missing those benefits caused someone to leave. KPMG’s survey

Is there evidence that Prime cancellations are surging?
No figure in the available evidence establishes a current surge. CIRP said 2% of U.S. Prime-member Amazon shoppers in its dataset canceled during the 12 months ending September 2024. That is a dated estimate for that dataset and population—not a current cancellation rate for all Prime members. CIRP also notes that its sample misses some former members who canceled Prime and stopped shopping at Amazon, so the figure does not capture every kind of departure. CIRP’s report
The distinction matters: a measured rate for shoppers who remain observable in a particular dataset cannot show how many people cancel across the entire customer base today. The cited evidence does not establish an accelerating cancellation trend or a wave of customers deleting their Amazon accounts.

Could Prime Video ads be pushing some viewers away?
They could be a reason for some viewers to reassess the service, but no cited source measures how many people canceled Prime or Prime Video because of ads. Amazon announced that limited ads would appear in Prime Video shows and films in 2024. At that time, it announced an optional ad-free tier for U.S. Prime members for an additional $2.99 per month; this is a historical announced price, not a statement of the current price. For someone evaluating Prime Video, the relevant trade-off is not simply “ads or no ads.” Consider whether the shows and films you watch are worth the membership cost, whether ads affect the content you care about, and whether the ad-free option’s additional charge changes the total cost enough to alter your decision.

What does streaming research say about people who cancel video services?
YouGov’s survey of 2,035 Great Britain adults aged 16 and older found that cost, content relevance, content quality, the amount of content, and the number of subscriptions influence decisions to stop a streaming service. The fieldwork ran October 20–27, 2025, and the article was published April 20, 2026. These are general streaming factors among a Great Britain survey population, not findings about Prime Video specifically or U.S. Prime cancellations. YouGov’s findings
Applied cautiously to Prime Video, those factors suggest useful questions for a household: Is there enough relevant content to keep paying? Is the quality satisfactory? Are multiple subscriptions duplicating the same kind of viewing? Those are decision prompts, not evidence that Prime Video customers cancel for any one particular reason.

How is the FTC case different from voluntary cancellations?
In September 2025, the FTC announced a $2.5 billion settlement resolving its allegations that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without consent and made cancellation difficult. The settlement included $1.5 billion in consumer redress, with relief intended for an estimated 35 million people affected by unwanted enrollment or deferred cancellation. The FTC’s September 2026 refund page says Amazon had issued more than $845 million by that month and would continue automatic refunds through April 2027. Eligibility is limited to qualifying U.S. customers who meet the page’s enrollment or failed-cancellation and benefits-use conditions; former Prime members should not assume that cancellation alone qualifies them.
