Indian bank shares were lower in the morning session on October 12, 2026, as a Moneycontrol report pointed to RBI liquidity-tightening measures and rising government bond yields as pressures. At 11:15 IST, Bank Nifty was down 488 points, or 0.88%, to 54,768.60. SBI, ICICI Bank, PNB and HDFC Bank were also down, but these intraday figures are not closing returns and do not prove that the same factors explain each bank’s move.
What happened to Bank Nifty and the major bank shares?
Moneycontrol reported that all 14 Bank Nifty constituents were in the red at 11:15 IST. The four shares named in the headline were lower at that same time:

| Share | Change at 11:15 IST, October 12, 2026 | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| State Bank of India (SBI) | Down 2.10% | ₹939 |
| Punjab National Bank (PNB) | Down 1.52% | ₹115.20 |
| ICICI Bank | Down 1.31% | ₹1,337.30 |
| HDFC Bank | Down 0.32% | ₹705 |
These are one-time intraday observations reported by Moneycontrol, not closing prices or full-day returns. SBI had the largest decline among these four in that snapshot; the report does not establish a company-specific reason for the difference.
Other reported declines included Union Bank of India (1.46%), Canara Bank (1.30%), Axis Bank (1.13%), Yes Bank (0.98%) and Bank of Baroda (0.91%). The Sensex was down 0.76% and the Nifty 50 down 0.62% at 11:15 IST, even as market breadth was positive: 2,135 shares advanced versus 1,642 that declined. The snapshot therefore showed both broad-market weakness and a pronounced bank-sector decline.

Why did the report connect the fall to RBI liquidity measures?
Moneycontrol’s account said the RBI planned to sell ₹25,000 crore of government bonds on Tuesday, October 13. Such a sale absorbs rupee liquidity from the banking system as buyers pay for the bonds. The report also said the daily minimum cash reserve ratio (CRR) maintenance requirement would rise from 90% to 99%, effective October 16. A higher minimum reduces banks’ flexibility to manage reserve balances through the maintenance period.
The report placed these measures alongside efforts to support the rupee, including a special dollar window for three state-run oil-marketing companies. Foreign-exchange operations can affect rupee liquidity indirectly. Taken together, the reported measures could make liquidity conditions tighter for banks. The policy details and their connection to the market move here are attributed to Moneycontrol; this account does not quantify the effect on any one lender.

How can rising bond yields pressure banks?
Moneycontrol reported that India’s 10-year government bond yield reached 7.3707% on October 12, up from 7.2994% on Friday. The report described the level as a three-year high and said the yield had risen for eight consecutive weeks, gaining 54 basis points in total.

Bond prices and yields generally move in opposite directions: when yields rise, the market value of existing fixed-rate bonds falls. Banks hold securities, so falling bond prices can create mark-to-market pressure on applicable portions of their portfolios. The scale and accounting treatment depend on each bank’s holdings and classification; the report did not quantify realized or unrealized losses bank by bank.

Higher yields can also add to funding pressure if banks need to pay more to attract or retain deposits and other funding. Tighter system liquidity may compound that pressure and weigh on treasury profitability. These are channels through which the reported developments could affect sentiment and bank economics, not proof that they caused every share’s decline on October 12.

No. A sector-wide intraday decline is not evidence on its own of a new earnings or asset-quality problem at each lender. The October 12 report attributes the pressure broadly to liquidity and yields; it does not identify the cause of each stock’s return. Historical results provide context, but they do not establish why shares moved that morning.

ICICI Bank
For the quarter ended March 31, 2026, ICICI Bank reported year-over-year profit-after-tax growth of 8.5%, a net interest margin of 4.32% and a net NPA ratio of 0.33% at quarter-end. It also reported Q4 net interest income growth of 8.4% and a treasury loss of ₹106 crore, compared with a ₹239 crore treasury gain in Q4 FY2025. These figures describe the bank’s FY2026 results, not a same-day explanation for the October share-price move. See the bank’s FY2026 results disclosures.

HDFC Bank
HDFC Bank’s limited-reviewed results for the quarter ended June 2026, approved on July 18, reported net revenue of ₹463.6 billion, compared with ₹531.7 billion a year earlier. The prior-year quarter included ₹91.3 billion in transaction gains from the partial divestment through the HDB Financial Services IPO, so the revenue figures need that one-off context. This filing is historical background, not evidence that the October 12 decline was caused by the revenue comparison. The results were filed as an issuer exhibit with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

PNB and other lenders
PNB’s official exchange-intimations page lists its Q1 FY2026–27 results release, presentation and earnings-call materials in July 2026. The index confirms that disclosures are available, but does not itself establish a bank-specific reason for PNB’s October 12 move. Any claim about a lender’s earnings, margins, asset quality or capital should be tied to the relevant dated filing rather than inferred from one trading session.
Quick Recap
How to read the move—and check the final returns
- Keep the timestamp attached. The quoted changes are at 11:15 IST on October 12, not end-of-day performance.
- Separate sector pressures from company news. Liquidity and sovereign yields can affect many banks at once; a bank-specific explanation requires evidence from that issuer’s disclosures or other relevant reporting.
- Do not treat the report’s explanation as a complete causal accounting. It presents liquidity and yields as pressures, but does not establish how much each factor contributed to each stock’s movement.
- Use exchange data for closing figures. The NSE reports catalogue provides dated market-data reports, including bhavcopy and market-activity reports. A dated October 12 file is needed to confirm closing prices and returns; the intraday account does not settle them.
