Angela van den Bogerd left her Football Association of Wales (FAW) role in March 2021 after mounting criticism over her involvement in the Post Office Horizon scandal. Contemporary reporting said she had left, but the available sources do not establish that she was formally dismissed. “Forced out” was the headline’s characterization, not a confirmed description of the employment process.
Who was the executive?
Van den Bogerd had held senior roles at the Post Office. The Post Office Horizon Inquiry identifies her as a former People Services Director and Programme Director for the Branch Support Programme. After leaving the Post Office, she joined the FAW as head of people. The inquiry’s witness page records her background and later evidence.
Why was her FAW appointment controversial?
Criticism focused on her involvement in the Horizon scandal and on findings made about parts of her evidence in the 2019 High Court group litigation concerning the Post Office’s Horizon computer system. In that case, judge Peter Fraser said: “There were two specific matters where [Van den Bogerd] did not give me frank evidence, and sought to obfuscate matters and mislead me.” The finding was expressly about two matters; it should not be presented as a judgment on all of her evidence. Computer Weekly’s report on the judge’s criticism reproduces the quotation.
What is established about her departure?
Computer Weekly reported on 19 March 2021 that van den Bogerd had left her FAW position after pressure mounted over her role in the Horizon scandal. Its report supports saying that she left amid pressure and criticism. The available reporting does not establish whether she resigned, was dismissed, or left under another arrangement, and it does not provide a direct explanation from van den Bogerd or the FAW.

How did the FAW chief executive’s departure relate?
The controversy around van den Bogerd’s appointment was also linked in contemporary reporting to FAW chief executive Jonathan Ford’s separate loss of a board confidence vote. Computer Weekly reported in February 2021 that the appointment controversy was said to have triggered the vote; citing Wales Online, it reported a result of 26 votes to five, with three abstentions. Those numbers refer to Ford’s vote, not to a decision about van den Bogerd’s employment. Computer Weekly’s account covers the vote.
Ford later left following the March no-confidence vote. In July 2021, the BBC reported that Noel Mooney had been named as his successor. The BBC report concerns Ford’s departure and succession, a distinct event from van den Bogerd leaving her role.

What did the inquiry hear later?
On 25 April 2024, the Post Office Horizon Inquiry heard evidence from van den Bogerd. The inquiry’s hearing page lists topics including redress, access to justice, complaint handling, governance, Horizon monitoring, technical competence, stakeholder engagement, oversight and whistleblowing. The hearing record provides a primary-source route to the evidence she gave. Her later appearance is part of the inquiry’s record; it does not alter what is established about the terms of her 2021 departure.
