It is investing in the existing A319 and A320 fleets while directing much of its new Airbus narrowbody growth toward the larger A321neo. The airline says those newer aircraft support upgauging, network needs and more premium seats; its public announcements do not give an A320 retirement schedule or a direct cost comparison between the models.
Has American Airlines stopped wanting Airbus A320s?
No. The claim that American no longer wants Airbus A320s confuses a shift in future orders with a decision to abandon aircraft already in service. In March 2024, American ordered 85 additional A321neos. Airbus said that brought American’s total A321neo order to 219; it also reported that 70 had been delivered as of January 31, 2024, a historical count rather than a current fleet total. American’s order announcement and Airbus’s announcement describe continued investment in the A320 family, not its rejection.
American has also announced cabin work for its A319s and A320s and agreed to technical upgrades covering 150 in-service A320ceo-family aircraft. Those commitments are inconsistent with a claim that the airline has simply walked away from the family, although they do not establish how long every individual aircraft will remain in service.
Why is American ordering A321neos instead of A320neos?
More capacity and premium seats
The A321 is the larger member of the A320 family. American described its 2024 aircraft orders as supporting measured growth, upgauging and expansion of premium seats on domestic and short-haul international routes. In this context, upgauging means using a larger aircraft to carry more passengers on a flight; the airline has not published a route-by-route plan showing where each aircraft will operate.

- Fully Assembled Model: Ready to display right out of the box
- Realistic Landing Gear: Includes accurately scaled landing gear for added realism
- Collector Display Model (14+): Ideal for aviation enthusiasts and adult collectors
American’s 2024 order package was not Airbus-only: it included 85 A321neos, 85 Boeing 737 MAX 10s and 90 Embraer E175s, as well as options and purchase rights. American said the MAX 10 would provide upgauging and network flexibility. Its broader stated goal is a fleet that is young, simplified and optimized for efficiency. The pattern points to a preference for larger aircraft in some future narrowbody growth, not a public decision that the A320 is unwanted.
Newer aircraft and manufacturer claims
Airbus says the A321neo’s new-generation engines and Sharklets deliver more than 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction and 50% lower noise compared with previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. Those are Airbus’s manufacturer-published comparisons, not American-specific operating results or a direct comparison with American’s A320s. The airline has not released an apples-to-apples cost analysis showing that an A321neo is cheaper to operate than an A320 on a particular route.

What is American doing with its existing A319s and A320s?
Refreshing passenger cabins
American said in 2024 that cabin retrofits for its A319 and A320 aircraft would begin in 2025, with power at every seat, larger overhead bins, updated seats and finishes, and more domestic first-class seats. In a September 30, 2026 update, the airline said retrofitted A319s and A320s were being introduced with enhanced interiors, more storage, connectivity and additional premium seats. That describes a rollout, not proof that every aircraft has already been retrofitted. American also said it planned to add Starlink service to A319/A320 aircraft in 2027; that is a future plan, not service confirmed as available across the fleet. American’s 2026 update gives the airline’s latest stated timeline.
Updating aircraft systems and airframe life
In April 2024, Airbus announced an agreement with American covering avionics and airframe-life upgrades for 150 in-service A320ceo-family aircraft. The announced work includes updated weather radar, navigation and communications equipment, plus airframe-life extension packages. This is a separate technical-modernization commitment from the cabin retrofit program. Airbus’s announcement describes the scope of the agreement; it does not provide an aircraft-by-aircraft completion schedule.

What do American’s newer fleet figures show?
American’s 2026 engine announcement said the airline had 84 A321neos and five A321XLRs in its fleet, with 120 more A321neos and 35 A321XLRs on order through 2032, and options for 116 additional A320-family aircraft. These are figures reported in that announcement and should be read as dated fleet and order counts, not as a guarantee of future deliveries or a current tally beyond its publication date. It also said future A321neo deliveries would use CFM LEAP-1A engines, with long-term maintenance from CFM International. The announcement does not say that American has ordered A320neos specifically; an option for A320-family aircraft is not the same as a firm order for a particular model.

The public announcements covered here do not establish a specific retirement date for American’s A320s or a plan to eliminate the model. They also do not disclose the purchase price, total operating costs, route-level profitability or a lifetime cost comparison between American’s A320s and A321neos. It would therefore be speculation to attribute the shift toward A321neo orders to a particular maintenance or fuel-cost disadvantage of the A320.

The clearest supported distinction is between the aircraft American is adding and the aircraft it is continuing to update: its new Airbus growth is centered on A321neo orders, while the airline has announced cabin and technical investment in A319/A320 aircraft already in service. Orders, planned upgrades and future connectivity plans should not be mistaken for deliveries or completed work.
