AMD announced in November 2024 that it would reduce its global workforce by approximately 4%, saying it was aligning resources with its largest growth opportunities. Reuters connected the move to AMD’s push to develop AI chips and compete with Nvidia, but AMD’s quoted announcement did not specifically name AI as the reason.
What did AMD announce?
On November 13, 2024, an unnamed AMD spokesperson told CRN that “a number of targeted steps” would reduce the company’s global workforce by approximately 4%. The spokesperson said AMD aimed to align resources with its largest growth opportunities and would help affected employees through the transition. CRN reported the statement.
Reuters reported the reduction as about 1,000 employees and framed it in the context of AMD’s AI-chip development and competition with Nvidia. That headcount is Reuters’ estimate; AMD’s quoted statement gave a percentage, not a confirmed number of employees separated. Reuters’ report, republished by Investing.com, is the source for that estimate and framing.
Why was AMD reducing jobs?
AMD’s public explanation was that it was aligning resources with its biggest growth opportunities. The November announcement did not explicitly say the cuts were exclusively for AI work or identify particular teams, roles, or locations.

Later, AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K reported $186 million in restructuring charges under a plan focused on improving efficiency and aligning resources with opportunities in AI and enterprise markets. That filing provides additional context for the company’s strategy, but it does not show that every job reduction was tied to AI or disclose which positions were eliminated. AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K was filed on February 5, 2025.
What was happening in AMD’s business?
The announcement came as AMD was investing in data-center products while its business segments were performing differently. Its October 29, 2024 results reported $6.8 billion in third-quarter revenue and forecast approximately $7.5 billion for the fourth quarter. Those figures show the financial context, but they do not independently explain the workforce decision. AMD’s Q3 2024 results contain the release and outlook.

In its 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, AMD reported the following full-year segment results:

| Gaming | $2.6 billion | Down 58% |
| Embedded | $3.6 billion | Down 33% |
| Restructuring charges | $186 million | Not stated |
These are company-reported figures for 2024; the restructuring charge is not an estimate of savings from the workforce reduction. AMD’s 2024 Form 10-K discusses the segment results and restructuring plan.

What happened with AMD’s AI efforts afterward?
AMD’s 2025 Form 10-K describes subsequent progress in data-center AI products. The company said it deployed Instinct MI350-series GPUs with hyperscale customers and advanced an annual AI GPU roadmap. It reported $16.6 billion in Data Center net revenue for 2025, up 32% from 2024. The filing also disclosed an October 2025 agreement with OpenAI to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, with the first gigawatt powered by MI450 products. AMD’s 2025 Form 10-K is the source for these later company disclosures.
Those developments establish that AMD continued investing in AI accelerators and reported data-center growth after the workforce announcement. They do not establish that the 2024 reduction caused the product deployments, OpenAI agreement, or revenue results. The available reports also do not provide a like-for-like, independently tested AMD-versus-Nvidia benchmark.
