More than 500 employees challenged the explanation in a letter to AWS CEO Matt Garman, calling it “non-data-driven” and disputing his reported claim that most workers he had spoken with supported the policy. The dispute was about both the mandate and how leadership justified it.
What Amazon announced—and when it would take effect
On September 16, 2024, CEO Andy Jassy announced that Amazon would expect corporate employees to work in the office five days a week beginning January 2, 2025. He framed the change as a return to how the company worked before COVID-19, while describing situations in which employees could work remotely.
Jassy cited illness, a child’s illness, a home emergency, travel to see customers or partners, a need for a day or two of focused work, and previously approved remote-work exceptions. The announcement set an expectation; it did not say that every employee had consistently worked in the office five days a week before the pandemic. Amazon’s announcement described the policy and leadership’s reasoning.
Why employees objected to the explanation
The immediate flashpoint came at an AWS all-hands meeting on October 17, 2024. Reuters reported that Garman said nine out of ten workers he had spoken with supported the policy. That was his reported account of conversations, not the result of a companywide poll.

More than 500 employees then sent Garman a letter urging Amazon to reverse the mandate. Reuters, which reviewed the letter, quoted its opening: “We were appalled to hear the non-data-driven explanation you gave for Amazon imposing a five-day in-office mandate.” The employees said Garman’s comments did not match many workers’ experiences and challenged the basis for his account of support. Reuters’ account, republished by Investing.com, covered the meeting and letter.
The word “appalled” comes from the letter. It captures the signatories’ reaction; it does not establish that all Amazon workers shared it.

Amazon’s stated case for five days in the office
Jassy said Amazon’s senior leadership team believed being together in person made it easier to learn, model and strengthen the company’s culture; collaborate, brainstorm and invent; teach and learn; and stay connected. He wrote, “When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant.”
He also said leadership’s experience with at least three office days a week over the preceding 15 months had reinforced its conviction. That is the company’s stated rationale and description of leadership’s experience. The announcement did not supply quantified evidence demonstrating that five days in the office would produce the claimed benefits.

What the employee letter and later survey added
The letter raised practical burdens employees associated with the mandate, including commuting, relocation, teams spread across different offices, caregiving, neurodiversity and medical needs. Reuters reported that an Amazon spokesperson pointed to commuter benefits, elder care and subsidized parking. These are the respective positions reported by Reuters, not independent findings that resolve the concerns or their effects.
A later survey offers more detail about the views of a group of corporate workers, but it should not be read as a companywide poll. The Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) said its online survey received responses from 1,065 current Amazon corporate workers between November 4 and 26, 2024. It was distributed through online discussion forums, social media and targeted digital advertising, rather than a random sample. SOC’s survey report presents respondent-reported attitudes and expectations.

These results help explain why commute length, team geography and confidence in leadership featured in the dispute. Because the survey relied on online recruitment and self-selected respondents, its percentages describe that group rather than all Amazon corporate employees. They also capture anticipated effects and stated intentions, not measured outcomes after the policy took effect.

The September announcement gave Amazon’s qualitative rationale and referred to leadership’s experience working in offices at least three days a week over the prior 15 months. It did not publish quantified evidence supporting the asserted benefits of a five-day expectation. The employee letter criticized Garman’s explanation as non-data-driven, and its signatories disputed his reported account of broad support.

That public record does not show that Amazon had no internal data; it shows that the announcement did not present quantified evidence for readers to assess. Nor do the employee letter and SOC survey establish whether five office days improve or reduce productivity across Amazon. They document objections and, in the survey’s case, the reported views of a non-random respondent group.
What the dispute was really about
Amazon described in-person work as a way to support collaboration, culture, invention, learning and connection. Employees challenged whether the explanation was supported by evidence, whether the reported support reflected their experience, and whether the policy accounted for the realities of commuting, dispersed teams and personal circumstances. The controversy was therefore not simply about preferring an office or working remotely: it also concerned what evidence leadership shared and how it listened to employees.
