Amazon’s five-day office expectation took effect for many corporate employees on January 2, 2025, but some locations reportedly needed more time because workspace was not ready. That was a site-level implementation delay, not evidence that Amazon suspended the policy companywide. The backlash reflects a bigger divide: Amazon says in-person work strengthens culture and collaboration; workers have pointed to the time, expense and personal disruption of commuting and losing flexibility.
What Amazon announced—and when
Amazon’s office policy changed in stages. In June 2021, the company said the baseline for eligible corporate roles would be three days a week in the office, with the option to work remotely up to two days subject to an exception process. GeekWire reported that in 2023 some workers received notices based on individual badge-swipe data; managers saw aggregated, anonymized information.
In February 2023, CEO Andy Jassy announced that employees would be expected to work in the office at least three days a week beginning May 1. In September 2024, he announced a five-day expectation for many corporate employees, effective January 2, 2025. The memo described exceptions for extenuating circumstances and employees with an approved remote-work exception. Amazon’s employee messages set out the company’s policy and rationale.
The December 2024 reports about later start dates concerned workspace readiness at some locations. CNA reported Amazon said most employees would have assigned workspaces by January 2, while timelines could differ at some sites. A delay at particular offices does not establish a companywide postponement.

Why workers object to a five-day mandate
For employees, the change can affect more than where a laptop is used. A five-day commute adds travel time and expense; fixed office days can complicate caregiving, medical needs and other responsibilities. A location requirement can also force a move or make a job less workable for someone who had built a routine around remote work.
Those concerns appeared in a letter sent by more than 500 Amazon employees to AWS CEO Matt Garman, as reported by Reuters. The letter cited commute time, family obligations, medical needs, relocation and neurodiversity-related concerns, and challenged the explanation employees had heard for the mandate. These are the concerns raised by the letter’s authors, not a survey of every Amazon employee.

The disagreement is partly about how benefits and costs are counted. Amazon’s case emphasizes what it believes teams gain from being together. Employees who value remote work may instead bear recurring costs in time, money and personal logistics. A policy can be administratively simple for an employer while imposing very different burdens on different workers.
What Amazon says in-person work is meant to achieve
Jassy has argued that office time helps employees learn and reinforce company culture. In his February 2023 message, he wrote: “It’s easier to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture when we’re in the office together most of the time and surrounded by our colleagues.” The company has also cited collaboration, brainstorming, invention, teaching and learning, and connection among teams as reasons for more in-person work.

These are Amazon’s stated reasons, not proof that five office days produce better outcomes for every role or team. The dispute is not simply whether collaboration matters; it is whether requiring attendance every weekday is necessary to achieve it, and whether the organizational benefits outweigh the costs workers experience.
How widespread was the reported dissatisfaction?
SFGATE reported that Blind surveyed 2,585 Amazon workers in the United States from September 17–19, 2024. In that platform survey, 91% said they were dissatisfied with the five-day mandate, and 73% said they were considering looking for another job because of it.

Those figures describe survey respondents on Blind, not all Amazon employees. Considering a job search is not the same as resigning or accepting another role, and the cited sources do not establish how many departures the mandate caused. SFGATE also quoted an anonymous Bay Area worker who described “uniform dismay” among colleagues; that account illustrates one workplace’s reaction, not a companywide measurement.
Opposition was not new to the five-day announcement. The Associated Press reported that hundreds of employees protested Amazon’s earlier three-day requirement at its Seattle headquarters in May 2023 and sought evidence for the company’s claims about in-person work. The same report noted Amazon had 1.4 million employees worldwide, but did not specify how many worked in offices; that global headcount cannot serve as a denominator for corporate-worker sentiment.

What the workspace delay does—and does not—show
The reported delay highlights a practical tension: an employer can announce a uniform attendance expectation before every location is ready to accommodate it. Different start dates at some sites can create uncertainty for employees and managers, but they do not by themselves show that the company withdrew the five-day expectation or that worker opposition caused the delay.
The available reporting supports a picture of a contested policy, uneven office readiness and varied employee costs. It does not establish a hidden motive such as using the mandate to force people out; SFGATE reported that Amazon denied that speculation and said the policy was intended to strengthen culture and connection.
