The company’s records document that transition, but do not identify one specific cause—such as maintenance costs or fuel use—as the decisive reason for retiring the -400.
Which 737 variant did Alaska retire?
It was the Boeing 737-400. Alaska’s current aircraft list includes the 737-700, 737-800, 737-900ER, 737-8 MAX and 737-9 MAX among its 737 passenger aircraft, but does not list the 737-400. The published roster can change as the fleet changes.
When did the 737-400 leave Alaska’s passenger fleet?
Alaska’s annual reports show a phased exit rather than a single retirement event. The 2012 forecast was to phase out nearly all passenger and combi 737-400s by the end of 2017; it was a plan at the time, not a final aircraft-by-aircraft service record.
| Year | Reported fleet changes |
|---|---|
| 2016 | Alaska reported retiring 13 737-400 passenger aircraft, receiving 19 737-900s, and removing three 737-700 passenger aircraft for freighter conversion. 2016 annual report. |
| 2017 | Alaska reported retiring 10 737-400 passenger aircraft, receiving 14 737-900ERs, and converting two 737-700s to freighters. It separately recorded five combi and one freighter retirement without identifying all those aircraft as -400s. 2017 annual report. |
Those reports establish the annual passenger-aircraft retirement counts, not the date of the last -400 flight or the final disposition of each aircraft. The 737-700 conversions were a separate change in role, not 737-400 retirements.

Why did Alaska retire the 737-400?
The documented explanation is fleet renewal: Alaska phased out the -400 while later-generation and larger 737s entered passenger service. The records do not single out maintenance expense, reliability, route economics or fleet simplification as the reason.
Alaska Air Group’s 2025 annual report says new aircraft are approximately 15% to 25% more efficient on a seat-by-seat basis than the aircraft they replace, attributing the difference to design, up-gauged capacity and engines. That is a broad company statement, not a measured comparison of the 737-400 with its replacements. The report does not provide a 737-400-specific fuel-burn or maintenance-cost figure. What took the 737-400’s place?
During the reported phase-out years, Alaska received 737-900s in 2016 and 737-900ERs in 2017. The records show these deliveries alongside the -400 retirements; they do not establish a one-for-one replacement of particular aircraft or routes.
Alaska announced 105 Boeing 737-10s and five Boeing 787s in January 2026, describing them as a mix of growth aircraft and replacements for aging 737s. That announcement reflects continued fleet renewal, not the specific rationale for the 737-400’s retirement years earlier. Alaska’s January 2026 announcement.
