Why Alaska Airlines Captain Brandon Fisher Is Suing Boeing Over the 737 MAX Door Plug Incident

Captain Brandon Fisher alleges Boeing’s earlier court arguments shifted blame toward the Flight 1282 crew. He seeks $10 million, while the NTSB’s separate accident findings do not resolve his lawsuit.

Alaska Airlines Captain Brandon Fisher sued Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems, alleging that Boeing’s position in earlier passenger litigation wrongly suggested that the Flight 1282 aircraft may have been improperly maintained or misused by others—shifting blame toward the crew. Fisher seeks $10 million; that is the amount he claims, not an award or a finding of liability.

What Fisher alleges

Fisher filed the lawsuit in Multnomah County, Oregon, on December 30, 2025. According to Associated Press reporting on the complaint, he says Boeing’s arguments in earlier passenger litigation implied that people outside Boeing may have improperly maintained or used the aircraft. He alleges that this position unfairly cast responsibility on the flight crew and harmed him. The claims are allegations, not findings by a court. Associated Press reporting

The complaint names both Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems and seeks $10 million in damages. The demand does not mean Fisher has received money, and the available reporting does not establish that a judge has found either company liable.

What happened on Flight 1282

On January 5, 2024, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, a Boeing 737-9 MAX departing Portland, experienced the in-flight separation of its left mid-exit door plug while climbing. The National Transportation Safety Board says the separation occurred at approximately 14,830 feet. Its investigation found that four bolts securing the plug had been removed during production work and were not reinstalled. NTSB investigation page

What the NTSB concluded—and what it did not decide

In its June 24, 2025 release, the NTSB identified Boeing’s failure to provide “adequate training, guidance and oversight” to factory workers as the probable cause of the accident. It also identified the FAA’s ineffective compliance surveillance and audit planning as a contributing factor. NTSB release

Those are the NTSB’s accident findings. They do not decide whether Boeing’s statements in other litigation defamed Fisher, whether his claims meet the legal requirements for relief, or whether he is entitled to damages. The accident investigation and Fisher’s civil lawsuit address different questions.

Where the lawsuit stands

The case was removed from Multnomah County Circuit Court to federal court in January 2026. The available docket index records an amended complaint filed May 29, 2026, and briefing dates in July 2026 on defense motions. The sources available for this article do not establish the outcome of those motions, a settlement, or a final judgment. For the docket record, see CourtListener.

Accordingly, the reported $10 million demand remains a claim rather than a court-awarded sum, and no outcome should be inferred from the filing or the NTSB’s separate findings.
