In October 2025, ADM offered U.S. farmers delivering soybeans to its Decatur, Illinois, processing facility a way to deliver grain without a storage charge and set its sale price later. The offer was aimed at encouraging sales while soybean prices were low and farmers were holding grain. It was temporary: Reuters reported that the offer ran through October 2025 and that participating farmers could set a price through September 2026. Both deadlines have passed.

Why ADM made the offer

Reuters reported on October 17, 2025, that ADM was trying to attract soybean deliveries as low prices and slower farmer selling left more grain in storage. Growers were holding their crops in hopes that prices would improve. One Illinois farmer, Steve Pitstick of Maple Park, told Reuters: “Because the prices are low, everybody is storing grain on the farm and saying: ’No, you’re not getting my grain until prices go up,’”

Reuters also described the market backdrop at the time: China, the largest soybean importer, had turned toward South America amid U.S. trade tensions. That was context for the October 2025 offer, not a complete explanation of soybean prices or a description of current trade flows.

What “free deferred pricing” meant

Under the reported arrangement, farmers could deliver soybeans to ADM’s Decatur facility without a storage charge, then choose a sale price later. Reuters said ADM would take ownership of the delivered soybeans. The offer therefore separated delivery from the farmer’s decision about when to set the price; it did not guarantee a higher price while waiting.

ADM’s reported offer window lasted through October 2025, with participants able to set a price through September 2026. Neither date is still open.

The tradeoff for farmers holding grain

Waiting to price grain can leave a farmer exposed to price changes: the market could rise or fall before the farmer sets a price. Delivering under a deferred-pricing arrangement could also reduce the burden of on-farm storage, but delivery and ownership terms matter. Reuters’s report says ADM took ownership of delivered soybeans; it does not provide a full contract or explain all terms farmers would have faced.

Storage was another part of the decision. Reuters reported that on-farm storage was being used, elevator capacity varied, and stored crops could be damaged. The story did not quantify storage limits or the likelihood or cost of damage. It also does not establish that this arrangement was financially preferable for any particular farm.

What the report says about other ADM bids

Reuters said ADM had recently raised basis bids to encourage sales, including a 20-cent rise at its Decatur plant during the week before the October 17, 2025, report. That was a dated market observation, not a current bid or a standing offer.

What is not known about participation

The Reuters report did not state how many farmers joined the offer or how many bushels they delivered through it. ADM’s vice president of producer origination said farmers had sold less than normal before harvest, but Reuters reported that she gave no specific amount. The article therefore does not establish the program’s uptake or the share of the crop sold.
