A February 2025 report raised questions about SpaceX’s influence at NASA after longtime SpaceX employee Michael Altenhofen joined the agency as a senior adviser to its administrator. The appointment and his work history prompted scrutiny because NASA relies on SpaceX as a contractor. They do not, by themselves, show that Altenhofen or another official improperly favored the company.
Who is Michael Altenhofen?
Ars Technica reported on February 3, 2025, that Altenhofen joined NASA as a senior adviser after interim administrator Janet Petro announced the appointment. The report described him as a SpaceX employee for about 15 years and said he had most recently led human-spaceflight programs there. It covered the appointment and the concerns it prompted at that time; it does not establish Altenhofen’s current NASA employment, responsibilities, reporting line, or decision authority. Why did the appointment raise concerns?
The concern centers on the overlap between Altenhofen’s recent work at SpaceX and NASA’s contractor relationship with the company. When a former employee of a major contractor takes an advisory role at the agency, observers can reasonably ask how potential conflicts are reviewed and how decisions involving that contractor are handled.
That is an accountability question, not proof of favoritism, misconduct, or a legal ethics violation. The report raised concern about SpaceX’s influence; it did not establish that Altenhofen or another NASA official improperly favored SpaceX.

What is known about NASA ethics rules—and what is not?
NASA says its employees must follow ethics standards concerning outside employment and business relationships. Those general rules provide a framework for assessing conflicts, but they do not establish that NASA made a particular finding about Altenhofen or required a specific safeguard in his case. The sources available here do not document an Altenhofen-specific ethics determination, financial disclosure, screening arrangement, or recusal. Nor do they establish that such measures were absent. A conclusion about his individual case would require case-specific records rather than an inference from his former employer.

How has the NASA leadership context changed?
When the February 2025 report appeared, Jared Isaacman was President Donald Trump’s NASA administrator nominee. The report noted his two Dragon flights and financial ties to SpaceX through the Polaris program. NASA’s current biography identifies Isaacman as the agency’s 15th administrator and says the Senate confirmed him on December 17, 2025. What would meaningful accountability look like?
The relevant governance questions are whether decision-makers disclose relevant ties, receive independent ethics review, and have clear boundaries for participating in matters affecting former employers or contractors. Transparency about those boundaries can help the public distinguish a managed appearance of conflict from improper influence.
- Transparency: What relevant professional or financial ties are disclosed, and what can be made public?
- Independent ethics review: Which officials assess potential conflicts, and what determinations are recorded?
- Recusal scope: If a person must step aside from certain matters, which decisions are covered and how is that boundary enforced?
- Equal treatment: Are NASA’s decisions about SpaceX evaluated consistently with decisions involving competing contractors?
The available sources do not answer these questions for Altenhofen’s case. They establish the reported appointment, his recent SpaceX background as described by Ars Technica, and NASA’s general ethics framework—not the terms of any individual safeguards.
