What did the $7,200 figure mean?
TechJuice reported that BitcoinFundi’s price for one bitcoin reached a maximum of $7,200. The article attributed the report to Cointelegraph and described the quote as an 85% premium over international prices at the time. Those are claims reported by TechJuice, not independently verified trade data. The article does not establish that a buyer completed a transaction at that price, how much bitcoin was available at the quote, or how the international comparison was calculated. TechJuice’s report
Why could a local quote diverge from international prices?
Bitcoin prices are not necessarily identical across venues. When buyers and sellers cannot readily move money between markets, local supply and demand can produce different offers. A working paper by Yanan Niu and Ilja Kantorovitch explains how segmented markets and costly conventional transfers can contribute to divergent peer-to-peer quotes. It analyzes LocalBitcoins data from January 1, 2017, through February 8, 2023, when that platform ceased operations; it does not verify BitcoinFundi’s $7,200 quote. “Bitcoin and Shadow Exchange Rates”
TechJuice linked the reported increase to higher demand and constraints on card transactions and international transfers. The available account does not independently establish those explanations as causes of BitcoinFundi’s quote.

Does the headline describe Bitcoin’s price in Zimbabwe today?
No. The report is historical, and the exact publication date is not shown; TechJuice’s page labels it “9 years ago,” supporting a 2017 attribution. It is not evidence of a current Bitcoin price, a Zimbabwe-wide market rate, or present-day BitcoinFundi availability. The 2024 notice from Zimbabwe’s Financial Intelligence Unit says the agency was assessing the crypto-asset landscape to understand its nature, extent and risks and recommend a regulatory framework. It lists exchanges, wallet providers, brokers and payment solutions as examples of service providers, but it is not a final legal ruling or a current platform directory. Why later exchange-rate figures do not update the Bitcoin quote
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s 2025 retrospective reports an average ZiG/US$ interbank rate of ZiG 26 per US dollar and an average black-market premium of 20% for that year. What a reliable price comparison would require
A meaningful comparison between a local and international Bitcoin price would need quotes from the same date and time, a clear currency-conversion basis, the venue and available liquidity for a comparable order size, and confirmation of whether each figure was an advertised offer or a completed trade. The historical report does not provide enough detail to calculate a precise premium or arbitrage return.
