Which Whole Foods stores were closing?
The locations named in contemporaneous reports were in Alabama, California, Massachusetts and Illinois:

When were the stores scheduled to close?
Five locations—Montgomery, Mobile, Tarzana, Brookline and DePaul—were scheduled to close May 6, 2022. Englewood was expected to close in the following months; the contemporaneous reports did not give a specific date for that closure.

Why did Whole Foods say it was closing them?
A Whole Foods spokesperson said the company regularly evaluated each store’s performance and growth potential and had made the decision as part of positioning the business for long-term success. The reports did not provide financial results for the six stores or explain the decision for any location individually.
What did the announcement say about employees?
A Whole Foods spokesperson said the company was supporting affected team members through the transition and expected interested, eligible employees to find positions at other locations. That was the company’s stated expectation; the reports did not establish how many employees ultimately transferred.

What Amazon sales figures do—and do not—show
Amazon reported $4.59 billion in physical-store sales in the first quarter of 2022, up 17.1% year over year, according to Supermarket News. Most of that physical-store revenue came from Whole Foods, the report said. The figure is company-wide context, not evidence of the performance of any of the six stores.

The contemporaneous reports do not establish the eventual status or occupants of the former sites, the individual stores’ financial results, or the final number of employees who moved to other Whole Foods locations.
