In Forbes’ 2016 U.S. wealth coverage, Bill Gates ranked first with an estimated net worth of $76 billion. Forbes also published an interactive map of the richest person in each state, but the complete state-by-state roster is not available in the accessible reporting. These are historical estimates and rankings, not a current list.

Bill Gates ranked first in Forbes’ 2016 U.S. list

GeekWire reported on May 26, 2016, that Forbes named Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates the richest person in the United States, estimating his net worth at $76 billion. That figure belongs to the 2016 ranking; it should not be read as Gates’ present-day wealth. GeekWire’s May 26, 2016 report.

Who was the richest person in each state in 2016?

Forbes’ feature included an interactive map identifying the richest person in every state. GeekWire highlighted several of its state examples, with estimated net worths attributed to Forbes:

State Person 2016 estimated net worth
California Mark Zuckerberg $51.6 billion
Colorado Charles Ergen $13.3 billion
New York Michael Bloomberg $43.6 billion
North Carolina James Goodnight $8.5 billion

The linked interactive map and its continuation page are not available in the accessible reporting, so these examples do not establish a complete roster for all 50 states. The figures are 2016 estimates, not audited personal balance sheets. GeekWire’s report does not provide enough detail to explain Forbes’ valuation methods.

#1 Best Overall
Adams Time Chart Map of History Book: 23' Fold-Out 6,000 Yrs Bible World
  • Sebastian C. Adams was a 19th-century educator and minister who spent years drawing this chart by hand before publishing it in 1871. He wanted ordinary families to see how the Bible and world history fit together, not as two separate stories, but as one. This edition carries that same purpose: 21 full-size panels, a hardcover case that keeps them together, and a chart you can open with your children the way parents did more than a century ago.
  • There is something almost overwhelming about seeing six thousand years laid out side by side. While one kingdom rises, another is already fading. While prophets speak in one land, armies are marching in another. This synchronological chart places sacred and secular history in parallel columns, using the same Ussher chronology that generations of North American families learned in Sunday school. Parents will recognize it. Their children will see it for the first time.
  • Fold it open like a book, or stretch it across the floor and watch it run twenty-three feet from wall to wall. Twenty-one panels unfold into one continuous stream of time, from Creation to the late 19th century. This is the kind of thing you gather the family around on a Sunday afternoon, or leave on a classroom wall for a semester. Kids who see the whole sweep of history stretched out before them start asking questions you never expected.
  • This edition preserves the 19th-century voice of the original chart—its handwritten commentary, its period artwork, and the way it reads like a document from another time. It is the same chart that hung in libraries and classrooms in the 1870s, inviting readers to trace the rise and fall of nations, the lives of prophets and kings, and the quiet turning points that shaped the world. You are not just looking at history. You are reading it the way a 19th-century student would have.
  • Some resources are meant to be studied. This one is meant to be lived with. Homeschool families use it as a spine for world history. Bible study groups unfold it on a long table. Parents tell us their kids keep it open on the floor, tracing the line from Adam to Abraham to David to Christ. It also makes a gift that says something: here is the whole story, from the beginning, in your hands.

How Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett fit the ranking

GeekWire reported that Jeff Bezos ranked third overall in the 2016 coverage and would have been the richest person in every state except Nebraska. There, Warren Buffett’s estimated net worth was $67.9 billion, exceeding Bezos’ fortune in that comparison. These are rankings and estimates from 2016, not a comparison of current wealth. GeekWire’s report.

Some states’ richest residents were below the billionaire threshold

In a May 25, 2016 follow-up, Forbes said the richest residents of six states did not appear on its annual World’s Billionaires list. Forbes described the states as “billionaire-barren” the previous year, referring to the absence of residents who met that list’s billionaire threshold. Its examples included:

State Person or people 2016 estimated net worth
Alabama Jimmy Rane $610 million
Alaska Jonathan Rubini and Leonard Hyde $350 million each
Delaware Robert Gore and Elizabeth Snyder $770 million each
New Mexico Mack Chase $690 million
North Dakota Gary Tharaldson $980 million
Vermont John Abele $600 million

The amounts are Forbes estimates for 2016, as reported in its follow-up; being the richest person named for a state did not necessarily mean reaching Forbes’ billionaire-list threshold. Forbes’ May 25, 2016 follow-up.
