The Coldplay concert video showed Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s chief people officer, Kristin Cabot, embracing and trying to move out of view after appearing on a stadium screen. It did not prove they were having an affair: that was speculation, echoed in a joke by frontman Chris Martin. Astronomer later confirmed their identities to the Associated Press and announced workplace actions.

What happened at the Coldplay concert?

On July 16, 2025, during Coldplay’s concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, a crowd-camera segment associated with Chris Martin’s “Jumbotron Song” showed a couple cuddling and smiling. After noticing themselves on the screen, the woman turned away and covered her face while the man ducked out of view.

Martin joked, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” The clip spread widely online, but the footage itself shows a reaction to being on camera; it does not establish the reason for that reaction or prove an affair. The Associated Press reported that Astronomer confirmed the people shown were Andy Byron, then its CEO, and Kristin Cabot, then its chief people officer. Associated Press coverage described Astronomer as a New York-based data company whose platform helps businesses organize data.

What happened to the Astronomer executives?

Andy Byron

Astronomer said Byron was placed on leave while its board opened a formal investigation. The following day, the company announced that he had resigned. Co-founder and chief product officer Pete DeJoy became interim CEO as the company began searching for a successor. Astronomer said, “Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.”

Kristin Cabot

ITV News reported on July 25, 2025, that Cabot had resigned from her role as chief people officer. The report said Astronomer’s public awareness may have changed overnight, while its mission to address data and artificial-intelligence problems continued. Read ITV News’s report.

Was Andy Byron’s viral apology statement real?

No. A statement presented online as Byron’s apology circulated after the video. In a July 18, 2025 fact check, Agence France-Presse reported that Astronomer senior vice president of marketing Mark Wheeler said it came from a troll account and was fake; the company said Byron had not issued it. AFP’s fact check also reported that the video had more than 58 million TikTok views as of that date. That is a dated figure, not a current view count.

What the episode says about filming in public

The incident also raised questions about how quickly a moment recorded at a public event can be connected to identifiable people and circulate online. The Associated Press quoted Mary Angela Bock, an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Journalism and Media, describing concern about facial identification and social-media tracking: “It’s a little bit unsettling how easily we can be identified with biometrics, how our faces are online, how social media can track us — and how the internet has gone from being a place of interaction, to a gigantic surveillance system.”

AP also reported that Gillette Stadium’s privacy policy says visitors’ image, voice, or likeness may be captured at the venue. That policy is relevant context, not a legal determination about this particular recording or its online distribution. The Associated Press report discusses the incident and those privacy questions.
