AMD hired Nazar Zaidi in January 2016 to lead its Cores, Server SoC and Systems IP Engineering organization. The former Intel and Broadcom engineer reported to CTO Mark Papermaster, with a remit spanning CPU cores, server chips, Infinity Fabric and CPU software tools. His role later grew, and AMD’s current biography lists him as senior vice president of AI Solutions Engineering.
Who did AMD appoint to lead CPU development?
AMD appointed Nazar Zaidi as corporate vice president of Cores, Server SoC and Systems IP Engineering. The March 2016 announcement coverage said he reported to CTO Mark Papermaster. Zaidi had joined AMD in January 2016 after a career that included Intel, Broadcom, NetLogic and RMI. eWeek’s report on the appointment described him as bringing 26 years of chip-industry experience at the time.
What did Zaidi oversee?
The appointment was broader than managing CPU design alone. AMD’s description of Zaidi’s responsibilities included CPU-core strategy, server-SoC architecture and implementation, Infinity Fabric, systems IP and the CPU software toolchain. In 2020, AMD announced his promotion to senior vice president while retaining responsibility for cores, server SoCs and systems IP.
AMD later credited Zaidi with helping deliver multiple generations of Zen x86 CPUs and server SoCs. The company’s leadership biography lists 46 patents in high-performance processor design and describes his overall career as spanning more than 30 years. Those are figures from the current biography, not measures of the 2016 appointment itself.

Why was the appointment important to AMD?
AMD was building its recovery around Zen, a new x86 architecture aimed at high-performance desktop and server markets. At its May 2015 Financial Analyst Day, the company also discussed K12, a parallel effort involving ARM cores. That roadmap made leadership across CPU architecture, server systems and related IP strategically significant; Zaidi’s appointment placed those connected engineering responsibilities under one executive.
The appointment followed Jim Keller’s departure from AMD, but the available company and appointment coverage establishes Zaidi’s remit and AMD’s roadmap rather than stating that he was a direct replacement for Keller. It is more accurate to describe the change as AMD appointing a leader for a broad engineering organization during its Zen-era development effort.

How did Zaidi’s AMD role change?
| Date | Role or milestone |
|---|---|
| May 6, 2015 | AMD described Zen as a new x86 core for high-performance desktop and server markets and discussed the K12 ARM-core effort. |
| January 2016 | Zaidi joined AMD. |
| March 28, 2016 | His appointment as corporate vice president of Cores, Server SoC and Systems IP Engineering was reported; he reported to CTO Mark Papermaster. |
| January 16, 2020 | AMD announced his promotion to senior vice president, with responsibility for cores, server SoCs and systems IP. |
| Current AMD biography, accessed October 2, 2026 | AMD lists Zaidi as senior vice president of AI Solutions Engineering and describes processor-and-server technology as his prior nine-year role. |
So, Zaidi did lead a major part of AMD’s CPU and server engineering organization, but that is not his current listed remit. AMD’s present biography identifies him with AI Solutions Engineering and characterizes his processor-and-server technology position as a prior role.
