No billionaire or donor network has been shown by the reporting here to have caused public opposition to Tesla. In March 2025, Elon Musk blamed ActBlue and wealthy Democratic donors for protests against the company. The demonstrations were real; the alleged funding and coordination were not established. A later Washington Post review also found that two of the five organizations Musk named did not raise money using ActBlue.
What did Elon Musk allege?
On March 10, 2025, Musk said an investigation had found ActBlue responsible for increasing protests against Tesla. Futurism reported that he named five groups and various wealthy individuals, but the basis for the investigation and who conducted it were unclear in the information reported at the time. That account describes Musk’s claim; it does not independently verify it. Futurism reported Musk’s allegation, including his request: “If you know anything about this, please post in replies.”
A request for information is not evidence that the allegation is true. Nor does the phrase “mysterious billionaire” point to a person identified as funding the protests: the available reporting does not establish that any particular billionaire did so.
What did reporting establish about the allegation?
On March 28, 2025, the Washington Post reported that Musk’s accusation lacked clear evidence. Its review found that two of the five organizations he named did not raise money using ActBlue. That finding checks part of the claim; it is not a comprehensive audit of every organization or donor, and it does not establish who, if anyone, financed or coordinated the demonstrations. The Washington Post’s review is the basis for that specific finding.

Were there protests against Tesla?
Yes. The Associated Press reported demonstrations at Tesla dealerships in the United States and some European cities in March 2025. Their occurrence shows that people protested; it does not demonstrate that ActBlue, wealthy donors, or another named party paid for or directed them. AP’s March 29 report describes the demonstrations and business context.
What do Tesla’s deliveries say—and not say?
Tesla reported 336,681 vehicle deliveries for the first quarter of 2025. AP compared that with 387,000 in the first quarter of 2024 and described it as a 13% decline. The figures establish a year-over-year delivery decrease, not why it happened or whether protests caused it. Tesla cautioned that deliveries are only one measure of company performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results. What might explain pressure on Tesla’s reputation or business?
AP’s reporting described several possible contributors: Musk’s public and political activity, protests, competition from other electric-vehicle makers, and the vehicle lineup or timing of model refreshes. These are contextual factors, not a measured breakdown of causes. The available sources do not isolate the effect of any one factor on Tesla sales or public opinion, and they do not establish that one person or group made “everyone” dislike the company.
That distinction matters for interpreting the headline. Observed protests and reported delivery numbers are different from an allegation about who funded demonstrations; neither, by itself, proves a cause for changing sales or sentiment. No broad population survey, estimate of how many people dislike Tesla, or reliable figure for protest funding is established by the reporting cited here.
