That was evidence of interest and a proposed bid—not a sale, accepted offer, or proof either party bought TikTok. TikTok later announced a different outcome: a U.S. joint venture established in January 2026.

Reuters reported that Amazon had sent a letter to Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. A U.S. administration official confirmed the letter, while Amazon declined to comment. TikTok and ByteDance had not immediately responded to Reuters at the time. The report described Amazon as interested; it did not establish that Amazon made an accepted offer or acquired TikTok. Tim Stokely-led consortium
Reuters also reported that Zoop, a company run by Stokely, had partnered with a cryptocurrency foundation to submit a late-stage plan to bid. This was a reported bid plan, not confirmation that the proposal was accepted or completed. The report does not establish that Stokely personally bought TikTok.

What was the TikTok sale deadline?
The coverage concerned an April 5, 2025 U.S. deadline. Both that deadline and Reuters’ April 3 report are historical; the deadline is not currently looming. The reporting described parties showing interest shortly before the date, but it did not say that a transaction had closed by then.

What happened to TikTok’s U.S. ownership afterward?
On January 23, 2026, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC announced it had been established under the September 25, 2025 executive order. TikTok USDS said the venture is majority-American owned, with Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX each holding 15% and ByteDance retaining 19.9%. Those are the ownership figures in the company’s announcement; they are not evidence that Amazon or Stokely’s consortium became the buyer.
The announcement describes safeguards for U.S. data, apps, algorithm security, content moderation and software assurance. These are commitments and descriptions attributed to TikTok USDS, not independently audited findings. The available announcement supports distinguishing the venture’s stated ownership and safeguards from the earlier reported interest; it does not by itself establish every legal or technical aspect of control.
