How did the later 2025 award round differ?
In reporting published December 17, 2025, The Associated Press described a different structure: five awardees sharing a $25 million pool, amounting to $5 million per recipient. AP identified David Flink, Ilana Walder-Biesanz, Richard Rusczyk, and Kara Ball. Its report said there were five recipients, so those four names are not a complete list.
| Award round | Recipients reported | Total pool | Amount per recipient | List status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Eva Longoria and Bill McRaven | $100 million total | $50 million each | Two recipients named in the announcement |

The two rounds differ in pool size and number of recipients. Those figures alone do not establish which round produced greater impact.

What is the Courage and Civility Award intended to recognize?
The organizers’ stated framing is to recognize efforts to address pressing social issues with courage and civility. AP described the later round’s rationale as bringing people together around solutions to neglected challenges. These descriptions explain the award’s stated purpose; they are not an independent assessment of results.
What has been said about the award’s impact?
David Flink, CEO of The Neurodiversity Alliance and a 2025 recipient named by AP, said: “I feel like there’s a narrative sometimes that our little actions don’t matter. That’s just not true. And this proves it.” He added: “Lots of little actions that happen every day in our work, collectively over time, reached the ears of folks like Lauren and Jeff.” These are Flink’s comments about recognition, not measured evidence of the grants’ outcomes.
