Treyarch was acquired by Activision in 2001. Today, the documented corporate chain is Microsoft → Activision Blizzard → Treyarch Corporation: Microsoft became Activision Blizzard’s parent in October 2023, rather than buying Treyarch in a separate transaction.
How Treyarch became part of Activision
Activision’s 2002 annual report says it acquired all outstanding ownership interests in Treyarch Invention, LLC, effective October 1, 2001. Treyarch’s own 2021 retrospective likewise says Activision acquired the studio in 2001.
Activision reported the transaction value as approximately $15.6 million, including forgiveness of a note receivable and acquisition costs. That is a historical accounting figure from the acquisition—not Treyarch’s current valuation.
How Microsoft fits into Treyarch’s ownership
Activision Blizzard’s 2022 SEC filing described a proposed merger structure under which Activision Blizzard would become a wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary. In October 2023, Activision Blizzard announced that it had officially become part of Microsoft. The resulting documented ownership chain is Microsoft, through Activision Blizzard, to Treyarch.

Activision Blizzard’s 2022 SEC-filed subsidiary exhibit lists Treyarch Corporation as a Delaware entity. The 2001 acquisition disclosure, however, names Treyarch Invention, LLC. Those records establish the historical acquisition and the later subsidiary listing, but do not establish that the two names refer to one unchanged legal entity.
What Treyarch does—and what ownership does not tell you
Treyarch is a game development studio associated with the Call of Duty series. Activision credited Treyarch and Raven Software as developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. That credit describes a development role; it is not a separate ownership arrangement.

The cited company filings and announcements establish the corporate chain, but do not establish Treyarch’s current leadership, staffing, internal autonomy, or standalone market value.
