The Wall Street Journal is owned by Dow Jones, which is part of News Corp. News Corp completed its acquisition of Dow Jones on December 13, 2007, ending the Bancroft family’s ownership of the publisher.

Who owns The Wall Street Journal today?

News Corp is the Journal’s parent company, and Dow Jones is the business within News Corp that includes the newspaper. News Corp’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K lists The Wall Street Journal among the products of its Dow Jones segment, alongside publications and services such as Barron’s, MarketWatch and Investor’s Business Daily.

News Corp describes Dow Jones as “a global provider of news, data and business information distributed through a variety of owned and off-platform media channels, including websites, mobile apps, newspapers, newswires, newsletters, magazines, proprietary databases, live journalism, video and podcasts.” News Corporation’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K, filed August 7, 2026, places the Journal within that segment.

How ownership changed in 2007

Before the transaction, the Bancroft family owned Dow Jones, the Journal’s publisher. On August 1, 2007, Dow Jones and News Corp announced a merger agreement under which Dow Jones would become a wholly owned subsidiary of a News Corp subsidiary. News Corp announced that the acquisition was complete on December 13, 2007.

The transaction materials filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describe participating Bancroft family members and trusts for their benefit as holding approximately 37% of Dow Jones voting power. That figure refers to their voting power in the 2007 transaction context, not to a current ownership stake.

What the deal documents said about editorial oversight

The 2007 merger proxy included specific contractual provisions giving a Dow Jones Special Committee oversight rights concerning certain editorial appointments and changes to its authority. Those provisions describe governance arrangements connected to the deal; they do not establish that ownership and editorial control are the same thing, guarantee editorial independence, or show that the same committee or protections remain in place today.
