Microsoft is publicly traded, and its largest reported shareholders are institutional investment managers. An Investing.com holder table dated June 30, 2026 names eight leading holders: BlackRock is first, followed by two separately listed Vanguard entities and State Street. These figures describe reported holdings on that date—not personal ownership by the managers or control of Microsoft.
Microsoft’s largest reported shareholders
The table below reproduces the eight clearly named leading rows in Investing.com’s June 30, 2026 holder table. The source extract does not provide two more named rows, so it does not support a complete top-ten list. The figures are a dated snapshot and may change as holdings are reported.
| Rank | Reported holder | Shares | Percentage | Table date and source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | BlackRock, Inc. | 607,367,113 | 8.18% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 2 | Vanguard Capital Management, LLC | 527,391,421 | 7.10% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 3 | State Street Investment Management | 315,653,206 | 4.25% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 4 | Capital Research and Management Company | 206,107,493 | 2.78% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 5 | Geode Capital Management, LLC | 189,632,090 | 2.55% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 6 | Vanguard Portfolio Management, LLC | 168,407,641 | 2.27% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 7 | FMR LLC | 161,466,741 | 2.17% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
| 8 | Norges Bank Investment Management | 102,732,956 | 1.38% | June 30, 2026; Investing.com |
The table lists Vanguard Capital Management and Vanguard Portfolio Management as separate holders; it does not combine them into one Vanguard total. Rankings can differ across data providers when affiliated entities are grouped differently.
What “owns Microsoft” means
Microsoft shares trade publicly, so ownership is spread among many shareholders rather than resting with a single owner. The companies named in institutional-holder tables are investment managers. They may report shares held or managed for funds, pension plans, and other clients; the table does not establish that the managers themselves receive all the economic benefit from those shares.
#1 Best Overall
Ownership reporting also distinguishes beneficial ownership from voting power and the power to dispose of shares. Those measures are not interchangeable with a simple claim of control. Microsoft’s 2025 proxy statement says its table covered persons or entities known to beneficially own more than 5% of common stock as of December 31, 2024, adjusted for the 2-for-1 stock split as of January 15, 2025. It relies on Schedule 13G disclosures for entries including Vanguard and State Street.

The report date matters
A holder’s share count and percentage describe a particular reporting snapshot, not a permanent stake. A later quarterly institutional report or beneficial-ownership filing can change the figures or the ranking. The June 30, 2026 date belongs to the Investing.com table above.

Filing types answer different questions
A quarterly Form 13F-based ranking reflects institutional investment managers’ reported holdings for a quarter. A Schedule 13G reports beneficial ownership under its filing rules, while a company proxy presents ownership information known to the company for the date and purpose specified there. These snapshots should not be treated as directly interchangeable. For example, ByteSize Finance describes its ranking method as multiplying reported shares by the quarter-end price; using that method, it identifies Vanguard Group as the largest institutional holder in 2025 Q4. That does not contradict a later table using different dates or entity groupings.
Microsoft’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, for the year ended June 30, 2025, incorporates the proxy’s stock-ownership and principal-shareholder disclosures. The proxy’s more-than-5% threshold and date differ from the eight-row Investing.com table, which includes reported percentages below 5%; they are not competing versions of the same dated list.
Quick Recap
Rank #3
What the list does—and does not—show
- BlackRock, Vanguard entities, and State Street appear among Microsoft’s largest named reported holders in the June 30, 2026 table.
- The table is useful for comparing reported institutional positions on its stated date, but it is not a live ownership register.
- It does not establish the personal Microsoft holdings of Bill Gates, Satya Nadella, or other insiders. Those require separate insider, beneficial-ownership, or foundation disclosures.
- It does not show that any one institution has unilateral control of Microsoft.
