Frito-Lay owns Lay’s potato chips and the Lay’s brand, according to Lay’s official FAQ. Frito-Lay North America is a PepsiCo business unit, making PepsiCo the parent-company context—not the Pepsi consumer brand.

Who owns Lay’s?

Lay’s identifies Frito-Lay as the direct owner of both its potato chips and its brand. Its FAQ states: “Lay’s® potato chips and the Lay’s® brand is owned by Frito-Lay®.” This is a corporate statement from Lay’s, not a quotation attributed to an individual.

Frito-Lay North America is a business unit of PepsiCo, according to PepsiCo’s company fact sheet. The ownership chain is therefore Lay’s → Frito-Lay → PepsiCo.

How Lay’s became part of PepsiCo

The companies’ history explains why Frito-Lay is the direct owner while PepsiCo sits above it:

  • Herman W. Lay began selling potato chips in Nashville in 1932.
  • In 1961, H.W. Lay & Company merged with the Frito Company to form Frito-Lay, Inc.
  • In 1965, Frito-Lay, Inc. merged with Pepsi-Cola to form PepsiCo.

These dates are from Frito-Lay’s official company fact sheet.

Pepsi and PepsiCo are not the same thing

Pepsi is a consumer brand; PepsiCo is the parent company. So it is accurate to say that PepsiCo is Lay’s parent-company context, but not that the Pepsi brand owns Lay’s. PepsiCo’s brands page lists the company’s brands.

What products does the Lay’s FAQ include?

Lay’s official FAQ lists Lay’s potato chips, Wavy potato chips, Kettle Cooked potato chips, Poppables, and Stax potato crisps among its product lines. These product names do not change the ownership answer: the FAQ identifies Frito-Lay as owner of the Lay’s brand.

Where Lay’s says its U.S. potatoes come from

Lay’s says every bag of its potato chips in the United States is made from potatoes grown on more than 100 farms across the U.S. and a handful in Canada. The company’s page does not state when that farm count was published, so it is best understood as brand-provided sourcing context rather than a dated independent statistic. Lay’s FAQ
