JLR remains a British company, with its global headquarters in Coventry and operations that extend beyond the UK.
Who owns Land Rover?
Land Rover sits within JLR, the company formerly known as Jaguar Land Rover. JLR’s company history says Jaguar and Land Rover came together under Tata Motors ownership in 2008, and JLR says it has been wholly owned by Tata Motors since that year. Its FY2025 reporting identifies Tata Motors Limited as the ultimate parent and controlling party of JLR entities. JLR’s history and company statement set out the timeline and ownership relationship.
Tata Motors and Tata Sons are not the same owner
The direct corporate parent is Tata Motors Limited. Tata Sons is Tata Motors’ largest shareholder, a position higher in the corporate group; it is not identified as the direct owner of the Land Rover marque. That distinction matters when describing who owns the brand: the ownership chain runs through JLR to Tata Motors.
How Land Rover fits within JLR
Land Rover is not the whole JLR company. JLR’s current portfolio presents four brands: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar. Land Rover’s vehicle identity is represented through the Range Rover, Defender and Discovery brands, while Jaguar is also part of JLR. See JLR’s current brand lineup.

Is Land Rover still British?
Yes: JLR describes itself as a British company and lists UK design, engineering and manufacturing operations. It identifies Coventry as its global headquarters. British identity does not mean every vehicle is built in Britain, however; JLR also has manufacturing sites outside the UK. The company’s careers information describes its UK presence and headquarters.

How the ownership history reached Tata Motors
- 1948: JLR dates Land Rover’s celebrated introduction and the launch of the Series 1 to this year.
- 2008: JLR says Jaguar and Land Rover merged under Tata Motors ownership, and that Tata Motors has wholly owned the business since then.
