Timothy Mellon is an American railroad entrepreneur, heir to the Mellon family fortune and major political donor. In 2024, Fortune reported that he gave $125 million to MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Donald Trump—not to Trump’s campaign itself. Fortune put his broader political giving, including support for Republican candidates and groups backing Robert F. Kennedy Jr., at $165 million.
Who is Timothy Mellon?
Mellon is the grandson of Andrew Mellon, the financier and industrialist who served as U.S. Treasury secretary. He belongs to one of America’s prominent banking and industrial families, but has largely avoided public attention and rarely speaks to the press, according to The Washington Post.
The Post reports that Timothy Mellon attended Milton Academy and graduated from Yale in 1964, where he studied political science and city planning. He worked selling computer software in the 1970s before turning to the railroad business.
How did Mellon make his money?
In 1977, Mellon established Guilford Transportation Industries, which acquired struggling rail lines in the Northeast. He later acquired the Pan Am name for the transportation business. The Washington Post reports that a Florida rail company completed its acquisition of Pan Am Railways in 2022. Fortune, in a November 2024 profile, gives a different account, saying Mellon sold the company to CSX Transportation for $600 million in 2020. Those accounts differ on the transaction timeline and details, so the sale should not be reduced to a single settled version on the basis of those reports alone.

His family background is notable, but the available reporting does not establish a precise current net worth. Fortune says Mellon estimated his wealth at roughly $700 million in a 2014 deposition and notes that his holdings are not well understood. That historical, self-reported figure is not a current audited valuation.
How much did Mellon give to Trump-supporting groups?
The amounts depend on the date and which recipients are counted. In July 2024, The Washington Post reported that Mellon had given more than $75 million to a super PAC supporting Trump by that point in the election cycle, including a $50 million contribution made on May 31. TIME reported the $50 million contribution to MAGA Inc. in June 2024, describing it then as the largest disclosed individual donation of that election cycle.

Fortune’s November 2024 account reported $125 million from Mellon to MAGA Inc. during the 2024 election cycle. These figures refer to reported contributions to a group supporting Trump, not direct donations to Trump’s campaign.
Why a super PAC donation is not a campaign contribution
MAGA Inc. is a super PAC. The Federal Election Commission explains that spending by outside groups to support or oppose a candidate is not directly given to or spent by that candidate. So describing Mellon’s $125 million as money “to Trump’s campaign” would misstate the recipient and the relationship.

Did Mellon also support Robert F. Kennedy Jr.?
Yes. The Washington Post reported that Mellon gave more than $25 million to groups supporting Kennedy. Fortune included Kennedy-supporting groups in its reported $165 million broader total for Mellon’s 2024 political giving, alongside Republican congressional candidates; it separately reported a $25 million contribution to American Values 2024, a PAC supporting Kennedy.
Kennedy described their connection as partly rooted in Children’s Health Defense and characterized their shared outlook in a text message to the Post. He wrote: “We share a libertarian bent rooted in free speech and hostility towards censorship, a mutual opposition to government corruption and regime change wars, a skepticism towards the military industrial complex and an antipathy towards the rising security/surveillance state and the growing power of the intelligence apparatus.” That is Kennedy’s account of their affinity, not a verified statement of Mellon’s private motives.

What do the reported donation totals mean?
| Reported amount | Scope and attribution |
|---|---|
| $50 million | TIME reported this May 31, 2024, contribution to MAGA Inc.; a dated figure, not the cycle total. TIME |
| $125 million | Fortune reported Mellon’s 2024-cycle giving to MAGA Inc. Fortune |
| $165 million | Fortune’s reported broader total, including Republican congressional candidates and groups supporting Kennedy. Fortune |
| Roughly $700 million | Fortune’s account of Mellon’s estimate in a 2014 deposition; a historical self-reported figure, not a current net-worth calculation. Fortune |
The Washington Post’s more than $75 million figure was a July 2024 snapshot of donations to a Trump-supporting super PAC; TIME’s $50 million figure concerned a single contribution disclosed at that time. They are not contradictory final-cycle totals.

Profiles describe a wealthy donor who keeps a low public profile and seldom speaks with journalists. That characterization refers to his limited public presence; it does not, on its own, establish anything about his business or political motives.
