Mustafa Suleyman was named Microsoft AI’s executive vice president and CEO on March 19, 2024, reporting to CEO Satya Nadella. The role initially covered Copilot and other consumer AI products and research. Microsoft’s March 17, 2026 update describes a changed structure: Suleyman continues to lead superintelligence work, while Jacob Andreou leads the Copilot experience across consumer and commercial products.
Who is Mustafa Suleyman?
Suleyman is an AI executive and a co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection, as Microsoft described him in its March 19, 2024 announcement. He joined Microsoft alongside Karén Simonyan, who was named chief scientist of the new Microsoft AI organization.
What was Suleyman’s original role at Microsoft?
In 2024, Microsoft named Suleyman executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft AI. He joined the company’s senior leadership team and reported to Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella. Simonyan reported to Suleyman.
The organization’s stated focus was advancing Copilot and Microsoft’s other consumer AI products and research. The announcement also said teams led by Mikhail Parakhin—including Copilot, Bing, and Edge—and Misha Bilenko’s GenAI team would report to Suleyman. Microsoft said this work continued to build on its partnership with OpenAI. These details describe the structure announced in 2024, not necessarily the organization as it stands today.

How did Microsoft’s structure change by 2026?
Microsoft’s March 17, 2026 update describes a unified Copilot effort spanning consumer and commercial products, including the Copilot experience, Copilot platform, Microsoft 365 apps, and AI models. Jacob Andreou was named to lead the Copilot experience across consumer and commercial.
The same update says Suleyman continues to lead Microsoft’s high-ambition superintelligence work and reports to Nadella. That is a more specific description of his continuing focus than the broad consumer-product remit announced in 2024.

What the appointment means—and what it does not
The appointment put an experienced AI leader in charge of a Microsoft organization whose initial public remit centered on consumer AI. It did not mean Suleyman personally led every Microsoft AI product indefinitely: the 2026 update assigns the Copilot experience to Andreou and identifies Suleyman’s continuing work as superintelligence.
For readers following Microsoft’s AI strategy, the key distinction is between the original organization announced in 2024 and the leadership arrangement Microsoft described in 2026. Titles and responsibilities can change as a company reorganizes; the later announcement is the relevant source for the updated division of work.
