AMD hired former Intel executive Dan McNamara on January 16, 2020, as senior vice president and general manager of its Server Business Unit. The appointment put him in charge of a specific goal: build on second-generation EPYC processors and accelerate adoption of AMD’s server solutions among cloud, enterprise, and ecosystem partners. AMD now lists him as senior vice president and general manager of Compute & Enterprise AI, a broader role that spans server and enterprise AI.
What AMD hired Dan McNamara to do in 2020
AMD’s January 16, 2020 announcement named McNamara senior vice president and general manager of the Server Business Unit. The company said he would build on the launch of second-generation EPYC processors and accelerate adoption of AMD server solutions with cloud, enterprise, and ecosystem partners.
That remit tied the hire to AMD’s server products and customer relationships; it was not simply a general leadership appointment. AMD CEO Lisa Su said at the time that strengthening and expanding the leadership team was key to building on the company’s momentum. That was Su’s stated rationale for the appointment, not evidence by itself of the hire’s later business impact.
McNamara’s Intel background
AMD’s executive biography says McNamara spent more than four years at Intel. His most recent position there was senior vice president and general manager of the Network and Custom Logic Group. He had previously led Intel’s programmable solutions group following Intel’s acquisition of Altera.

Before Intel, his career included roles at Altera and StarGen, co-founding SemiTech Solutions, and engineering positions at Raytheon. AMD’s biography says he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
His current AMD role is broader than the 2020 job
AMD currently lists McNamara as senior vice president and general manager of Compute & Enterprise AI (CEAI). The company says he leads its high-performance server and enterprise AI business across cloud, enterprise, high-performance computing, sovereign AI, and partner ecosystems. His responsibilities include product and solutions strategy, customer and partner engagement, and business execution.

- Dual Processor Support: Supports and includes 2 AMD EPYC processors installed for enhanced computing performance
- Processor Configuration: Features 2 installed AMD EPYC processors for powerful server operations
- AMD Processor Technology: Equipped with AMD processor manufacturer components for reliable performance
- EPYC Processor Type: Utilizes AMD EPYC processor type designed for enterprise-level server applications
- 5th Generation Processing: Powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC 9115 processors running at 2.60 GHz with hexadeca-core architecture
The distinction matters: “Server Business Unit” describes the position AMD announced in 2020; “Compute & Enterprise AI” is the title and remit shown in his current company biography. AMD says the organization under his leadership expanded the EPYC portfolio and increased adoption across global markets. That is AMD’s account of its progress, not an independent measurement of results or proof that McNamara’s appointment caused them.
What EPYC’s later product development shows
AMD announced availability of its fifth-generation EPYC 9005 processors on October 10, 2024. The company described them as Zen 5 processors for the SP5 platform, with configurations ranging from 8 to 192 cores. AMD named Cisco, Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo, Supermicro, original design manufacturers (ODMs), and cloud service providers as supporting the lineup. Its launch announcement advises customers to check system compatibility with the server manufacturer; these are server processors, not desktop drop-in upgrades.

In that October 2024 announcement, AMD reported more than 950 EPYC-powered public instances globally and more than 350 platforms from ODMs. These are company-reported ecosystem figures from the time of the announcement, not a current count.
AMD’s 2025 annual report later described the fifth-generation EPYC family among its 2025 launches and said it previewed Helios, an AI rack-scale platform combining CPUs, GPUs, and networking. The 2024 availability announcement and the annual report’s 2025 description are distinct company statements about product timing and launches.

Does “booming” accurately describe EPYC?
“Booming” is a headline characterization, not a growth measure established by the cited material. AMD’s 2020 announcement expressed a goal of accelerating EPYC adoption, and its current biography describes expanded products and increased adoption. The reviewed company sources do not provide an independently verified growth rate, market-share figure, or causal estimate connecting McNamara’s appointment to EPYC’s performance.
AMD also made performance claims in the 2024 EPYC launch release, including comparisons under specified workloads and tests. Those figures should be read as AMD’s results under the stated test conditions, not as independent benchmarks or general performance guarantees. McNamara, speaking in the context of that launch, credited five generations of on-time roadmap execution with meeting data-center needs; that statement, too, was the company executive’s assessment.
