Robert M. Calderoni is a veteran technology executive who served twice as Citrix’s interim president and CEO. His second term began on October 5, 2021, and ended when Citrix’s acquisition closed on September 30, 2022. Citrix is now a business unit of Cloud Software Group, whose CEO is Tom Krause—not Calderoni.

Who is Bob Calderoni?

Calderoni has more than 30 years of technology-industry executive experience, spanning finance, enterprise software, and board leadership. He held senior finance roles at IBM and Apple, became CFO of Avery Dennison, and led enterprise-software company Ariba as CEO beginning in 2001.

After SAP acquired Ariba in 2012, Calderoni continued in leadership at SAP, served on its global managing board, and was president of SAP Cloud from 2013 to 2014. That background gave him experience with enterprise software and cloud services before his later Citrix leadership roles. ANSYS’s biography of Robert M. Calderoni and KLA’s announcement of his appointment as chair describe his career and later board work.

What was his role at Citrix?

Calderoni joined Citrix’s board in 2014. He became executive chairman in July 2015, served as interim president and CEO from October 2015 through January 2016, and remained chairman through December 2018. He returned as interim president and CEO on October 5, 2021, after David Henshall stepped down. Citrix’s 2021 leadership announcement described his prior experience with the company and the appointment.

His two interim appointments were temporary leadership assignments, not announcements that he had become Citrix’s permanent CEO. The earlier term followed a board-level operational review and included work on organizational change and CEO-search preparation, according to Citrix’s 2016 proxy statement. That earlier assignment provides context for why the board knew him, but it should not be treated as a complete description of his later mandate.

Why did Citrix appoint him in 2021?

Henshall’s departure created an immediate leadership vacancy while Citrix was pursuing a shift toward SaaS and cloud-delivered services. Calderoni was already board chair, had familiarity with Citrix’s business, and had served as interim CEO before. The board therefore chose an experienced insider to provide continuity during a leadership transition and a period of strategic change.

Citrix’s announcement connected the company’s direction to a secure, unified work experience and reported that it had more than a dozen SaaS services supporting more than 11 million subscribers at that time. Those figures were company-reported in the October 2021 announcement; they are not a current subscriber count. The strategy was Citrix’s broader corporate effort, not a cloud business that Calderoni created when he took the interim role.

What did Citrix’s cloud strategy involve?

Citrix’s use of “cloud” was not the same as operating a hyperscale infrastructure platform like AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. Its products helped organizations deliver and manage applications and desktops, provide secure access to work resources, and coordinate user access across different environments.

In practical terms, Citrix’s digital-workspace approach could include:

  • Delivering virtual desktops and applications to employees working remotely or in hybrid arrangements.
  • Managing access to applications, identities, endpoints, and security policies.
  • Deploying services through public cloud, private cloud, on-premises data centers, or combinations of those environments.
  • Offering software through subscriptions as well as supporting existing enterprise deployments.

Citrix’s company overview describes its digital-workspace business, while its later account of its first year in Cloud Software Group discusses application and desktop delivery across public cloud, private cloud, and on-premises data centers. The cloud transition did not mean every customer had to move all workloads to one public cloud.

How did the 2022 acquisition end his interim tenure?

Citrix’s ownership changed while Calderoni was still interim CEO. In July 2022, the company said he would remain in the role until the pending transaction closed and identified Tom Krause to lead the combined business. The July transaction update set out that transition.

On September 30, 2022, Vista Equity Partners and Evergreen Coast Capital completed their acquisition of Citrix and combined it with TIBCO under Cloud Software Group. The transaction announcement put the value at $16.5 billion including assumed Citrix debt; Citrix shareholders received $104 per share. Citrix became private, and its common stock ceased trading on Nasdaq. Cloud Software Group’s closing announcement confirms the completion and terms.

Cloud Software Group described itself in January 2023 as the holding company formed through the Citrix take-private transaction and TIBCO combination. Its CEO update identified Krause as CEO of the combined organization.

Who leads Citrix now?

Citrix now operates as a business unit within Cloud Software Group rather than as the independent publicly traded company Calderoni led. Cloud Software Group lists Tom Krause as its CEO and presents Citrix leadership separately on its About Us page. Calderoni is therefore properly described as a former Citrix interim CEO and former chairman, not as Citrix’s current CEO.
