Heath Ledger’s daughter, Matilda, was not named in his 2003 will because it was written before she was born. After Ledger’s death, his family said it would provide for Matilda and her mother, Michelle Williams. In September 2008, Ledger’s father, Kim, said the family had gifted everything to Matilda. The public record does not establish the legal details of that transfer or Matilda’s current finances.

Who inherited Heath Ledger’s estate?

Ledger’s 2003 will named his parents and three sisters, according to ABC News’ September 2008 report. It was signed before his daughter Matilda was born, so she was not included in the will. The same report said Michelle Williams was not named either.

That was not the end of the story. In March 2008, Ledger’s father, Kim Ledger, said the family would take care of Matilda and Williams. “Matilda is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family,” he said in a statement reported by CBS News. “They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be.”

By September, Kim Ledger described the outcome more specifically: “There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda,” he told ABC News, which republished an AFP report. In other words, contemporary reporting distinguishes between the people named in the original will and the family’s later gift to Matilda. It does not establish the legal mechanism, any trust terms, or when Matilda could access the assets.

How much was Heath Ledger’s estate worth?

ABC News reported in 2008 that the estate was believed to be worth more than US$20 million. That was a contemporary estimate, not a verified final accounting. The same report said Ledger’s 2003 will listed US$145,000 in assets and cash at that earlier point; that figure should not be confused with the estate’s value at his death.

Where is Heath Ledger’s daughter now?

Public information about Matilda’s current life is limited. In a May 21, 2025 article, Vanity Fair reported that Matilda was 19 and that Williams had three younger children with her husband, director Thomas Kail. That dated update does not establish where Matilda lives, what she does, or the details of her private life.

What is known—and not known—about the inheritance?

  • Known from contemporaneous reporting: Ledger’s 2003 will named his parents and sisters, and was written before Matilda’s birth.
  • Announced by his father in 2008: the family intended to provide for Matilda and Williams; later, Kim Ledger said the family had gifted everything to Matilda.
  • Not established in the cited public accounts: the transfer’s legal structure, trust provisions, payment schedule, final audited estate value, or Matilda’s present access to funds.
