The sale followed a change in preferred bidder: James Bord’s consortium was selected first, then withdrew, and Arise became the replacement preferred bidder. Although Bord is associated with an AI sports analytics company, public reporting does not show that AI ranked the bidders or established who was objectively the best owner.
Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
Arise Capital Partners completed the purchase on 2 May 2026, ending Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership, according to BBC Sport. Arise’s consortium comprised David Storch, his son Michael Storch, and Tom Costin.

The outcome was not a straight contest in which three bids were publicly ranked and the highest or strongest was chosen. The preferred-bidder role changed during the sale process: Bord’s group was selected first, withdrew, and was replaced by Arise.
How the preferred bidder changed
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 24 December 2025 | BBC Sport reported that James Bord had been chosen as preferred bidder. Mike Ashley and David Storch, joined by Tom Costin, were also named among bidders. The report noted uncertainty about Bord’s consortium and EFL approval. BBC Sport’s report |
| 25 February 2026 | Bord’s consortium withdrew from the proposed takeover, leaving administrators to seek another buyer. BBC reporting |
| 10 March 2026 | Sheffield Wednesday named Arise Capital Partners LLC as the new preferred bidder. The club said the consortium supplied a substantial deposit and evidence of funds. Its offer was below the amount needed for creditors to receive 25 pence in the pound; administrators called it the best available outcome then achievable. The club’s statement |
| 11 March 2026 | David Storch told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I am very sincere when I say the fans will own the club, we will be the custodians.” He also said the consortium would be “partners of the fans” as it sought to restore the club. These were statements of intention, not evidence that those outcomes had already been achieved. BBC coverage |
| 2 May 2026 | BBC Sport reported that Arise had bought the club. The EFL would not impose a 15-point deduction following the club’s exit from administration, and Wednesday would remain under budget restrictions for two seasons while still permitted to sign players. BBC Sport |
“Preferred bidder” describes a position in a sale process, not a guarantee that a purchase will complete. In this case, the first preferred bidder withdrew and Arise took over that role before completing the deal.

Did AI name the best bidder?
No evidence in the public reporting establishes that an AI system assessed the rival bids or named a best bidder. BBC Sport described Bord as running Short Circuit Science, an AI and machine-learning sports analytics company, and reported the company’s advisory work with clubs. That supports a description of Bord’s professional background; it does not show that AI selected him as an owner or evaluated the competing offers. BBC Sport’s account
Nor does sports analytics experience by itself demonstrate that a prospective owner has the financing, governance, or club plan needed to run a football club. Those are separate questions, and the reported facts do not provide a validated model or common dataset that would let a reader reproduce a ranking.

“Best” depends on the criteria. A meaningful comparison would look at the same evidence for each bidder, including:
- Demonstrated funding and capacity to cover the club’s operating losses.
- The return offered to creditors and the certainty of that payment.
- Regulatory readiness, governance, and ability to meet league requirements.
- Continuity of club operations and protection of the club’s future.
- Relevant experience in football ownership or management.
- A specific, funded plan for the squad and stadium.
The published record does not disclose comparable bid valuations, complete financing details, or equivalent plans for all three groups. It therefore supports the chronology and some stated conditions, but not an independent scorecard or a definitive judgment that one bid was objectively superior. The 25-pence creditor figure was a condition described in the club’s March 2026 statement, not a general EFL rule established by that statement.
What the completed sale means for the club
BBC Sport reported that Wednesday avoided a 15-point deduction on leaving administration, while remaining under budget restrictions for the next two seasons. The restrictions were reported alongside permission to sign players; they should not be confused with the creditor-return figure or treated as a measure of which bidder was best.
The Companies House filing history lists an administrator’s progress report filed on 2 June 2026 and a notice extending the administration period filed on 30 August 2026. Those entries are part of the corporate record, but the filing-history index by itself does not establish the current status of every club or stadium entity. Companies House filing history
