The announcement described an agreement, but the available reporting does not establish when—or whether—the transaction formally closed. The buyer said it wanted to turn Napster into a social music platform; those features were plans, not confirmed results.
Who bought Napster, and what was the deal?
Infinite Reality, a company focused on immersive technology and digital experiences, announced the $207 million agreement. Its announcement was carried by GlobeNewswire; the Associated Press also reported the buyer and announced value.
The distinction between an announced definitive agreement and a completed acquisition matters. The announcement and contemporaneous coverage establish the agreement and its stated value, but do not establish a closing date or final accounting terms. The $207 million figure should therefore be read as the announced deal value, not as a verified final payment or a measure of Napster’s current worth.
What Infinite Reality said it planned to do with Napster
At the time of the announcement, Infinite Reality described a plan to reshape the streaming service as a social platform where artists could build relationships with fans and earn money. The ideas included virtual 3D concert spaces, digital and physical merchandise, and expanded artist analytics. These were stated ambitions, not evidence that the features launched or generated revenue.

Napster CEO Jon Vlassopulos framed the proposal as a shift in how people experience music: “The internet has evolved from desktop to mobile, from mobile to social, and now we are entering the immersive era. Yet, music streaming has remained largely the same. It’s time to reimagine what’s possible.”
Why the Napster name means different things at different times
Napster first became famous as a peer-to-peer file-sharing service. The Associated Press traces its launch to 1999, when Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker created an application that made music sharing easy—and helped bring copyright disputes to the forefront. The original service shut down amid litigation in the early 2000s.

The name later returned in the licensed subscription music business after changes in ownership and revival efforts, a history recounted by the Los Angeles Times. That history is why “Napster was sold” can sound like one continuous service changing hands: the brand persisted, but its products and business models changed substantially.

What Napster became after the announcement
In May 2025, the company announced that Infinite Reality would rebrand as Napster Corporation and launch Napster AI, including a beta experience called Napster Spaces. That was a corporate identity and product-strategy announcement; it does not show that the legacy music-streaming app itself became an AI agent.
