Re:

Who Are the Winners and Losers of the Intel–NVIDIA Deal?

Intel is the clearest immediate winner of the Intel–NVIDIA deal, but promised products are not yet proven. AMD faces competitive pressure; TSMC’s risk depends on a future manufacturing shift.

Intel is the clearest immediate winner: NVIDIA agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel, and the companies announced plans for jointly developed data-center and PC chips. NVIDIA gains access to Intel’s x86 CPU ecosystem; AMD faces the clearest competitive pressure. TSMC is only a possible longer-term loser because no manufacturing shift to Intel was announced. The promised products and their benefits remain unproven.

What did Intel and NVIDIA agree to?

On September 18, 2025, Intel and NVIDIA announced plans to jointly develop multiple generations of custom data-center and PC products connected using NVIDIA NVLink. The announcement described two product categories:

  • AI infrastructure: Intel would build custom x86 CPUs for NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure platforms.
  • PCs: Intel would build and sell x86 system-on-chips integrating NVIDIA RTX GPU chiplets.

This was a collaboration and investment announcement, not an acquisition. The product plans do not establish that any chips have shipped or disclose product names, prices, launch dates, benchmarks, availability, or customer commitments. The companies’ September 18 announcement describes their intended collaboration.

Separately, Intel’s agreement with NVIDIA, entered into on September 15 and disclosed in an SEC filing, specified a purchase of 214,776,632 Intel shares for $23.28 each, or $5 billion in cash. The deal was subject to customary closing conditions, including any required antitrust waiting period and approvals. NVIDIA received no governance or information rights beyond those of an ordinary Intel shareholder, according to Intel’s Form 8-K.

Who stands to gain or lose?

Company or group Immediate effect Potential longer-term effect What remains uncertain
Intel $5 billion share purchase agreement with NVIDIA Potential role supplying custom x86 CPUs for NVIDIA AI systems and integrated x86–RTX PC chips Closing, execution, product timing, performance, economics, and customer adoption
NVIDIA Agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel common stock Potential access to Intel’s x86 ecosystem and custom CPU options for AI infrastructure Product success, sales, and the value of the collaboration
AMD Its shares fell slightly on announcement day, according to AP Could face stronger competition in PCs and AI data-center CPUs if the planned products succeed Whether customers switch or AMD loses market share
TSMC No manufacturing shift was announced Could face a new foundry competitor or lose a customer opportunity if NVIDIA moves some production to Intel Whether NVIDIA manufacturing moves to Intel at all
Cloud, enterprise, and PC customers No immediate product or price change was established May eventually have more chip configurations to consider Availability, price, performance, power use, and software support

Intel: the clearest immediate winner, with execution still to come

The investment is the deal’s most concrete financial element for Intel: NVIDIA agreed to buy newly specified Intel shares for $5 billion in cash, subject to closing conditions. Beyond the capital, a successful collaboration could give Intel a role in NVIDIA AI infrastructure and put Intel x86 alongside NVIDIA graphics in a PC chip.

Those are prospective opportunities, not proof that Intel’s manufacturing technology or product economics will improve. Intel’s announcement cautioned that benefits, timing, product success, and closing conditions were uncertain.

NVIDIA: a strategic expansion beyond GPUs

NVIDIA could combine its accelerated-computing platforms with custom Intel x86 CPUs and draw on Intel’s established CPU ecosystem. The PC plan similarly pairs Intel x86 technology with NVIDIA graphics in one chip. These moves could broaden NVIDIA’s options; the announcement does not demonstrate performance gains or guarantee sales. NVIDIA’s investment also does not give it special governance or information rights, according to Intel’s filing.

AMD: the clearest competitive exposure

AMD competes in both CPUs and GPUs. If Intel and NVIDIA deliver the planned PC chips, they would bring together two established suppliers’ technologies in an integrated product. Custom Intel CPUs for NVIDIA AI infrastructure could also create another offering in data centers. But competitive pressure is not the same as lost business: AP reported only a slight decline in AMD shares on announcement day, not customer losses or a change in market share. The Associated Press’s September 18, 2025 coverage reported the market reaction and manufacturing context.

  • High-Performance Engine Clock: Delivers an engine clock of 2540 MHz, providing the compute power needed for demanding professional applications and AI inference.

TSMC: a conditional, not established, loser

TSMC could face a competitive threat if NVIDIA eventually shifts some manufacturing to Intel Foundry. But AP reported that no manufacturing deal had been struck when the companies announced their collaboration, and that both Intel and NVIDIA remained successful TSMC customers. Without an announced foundry arrangement, treating TSMC as a current loser goes beyond the evidence.

Customers: potential benefits, not yet realized

Cloud and enterprise buyers might eventually gain another CPU option for AI systems, while PC buyers could see chips combining x86 and RTX technology. Greater choice or integration could benefit customers, but neither lower prices nor better performance follows automatically from the announcement. A product would need to be available and evaluated on price, performance, power use, and software support before buyers could judge its value.

What did investors do on announcement day?

AP reported that Intel shares rose 22.8%, NVIDIA shares gained more than 3%, and AMD shares declined slightly on September 18, 2025. These figures describe a one-day share-price response reported that day, not a measure of the deal’s eventual value or operating success.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang called the announcement “a fusion of two world-class platforms,” according to the companies’ September 18 release. AP quoted Huang saying, “This partnership is a recognition that computing has fundamentally changed.” Those statements express the companies’ rationale; they are not evidence that the products will meet particular performance or sales targets.

How to judge the deal’s eventual value

  • For Intel: whether the investment closes and whether the planned products become successful, commercially meaningful offerings.
  • For NVIDIA: whether custom Intel CPUs expand its AI infrastructure options and whether the PC chips reach customers.
  • For AMD: whether the products win actual customers in PC or AI data-center markets, rather than simply appearing on a roadmap.
  • For TSMC: whether NVIDIA shifts any manufacturing to Intel; the announcement itself did not do so.
  • For buyers: compare actual availability, price, performance, power use, and software support once products can be assessed.
