Which Used MacBooks Are the Best Deals? A 2026 Buying Guide

The M2 MacBook Air is the best used MacBook for most buyers; the M1 Air is the budget pick and the 14-inch M1 Pro suits sustained work. Compare memory, battery, warranty and live prices before buying.

For most buyers, the used MacBook Air with M2 is the best balance of price, capability and age; the M1 Air is the budget pick, and the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro is the better choice for sustained professional work. The title’s 2025 date is now past, so this guide uses current buying criteria and clearly labels any live marketplace prices as August 2026 listing snapshots—not verified 2025 prices or completed-sale averages. A used MacBook is a good deal only when its configuration, battery, condition, protection and price make sense together.

Best used MacBooks at a glance

Rank Model Best for Configuration to seek Value test
1 MacBook Air M2, 13-inch Most buyers 16GB memory and 512GB SSD if affordable Pay more than for an M1 only when the newer design, battery age and configuration justify it; avoid paying close to a newer warrantied model.
2 MacBook Air M1, 13-inch Students, office work and budget buyers 16GB preferred; 8GB/256GB is a floor for light use Choose it when clearly cheaper than a comparable M2 and the battery is in good condition.
3 MacBook Pro 14-inch, M1 Pro Editing, development and other sustained workloads 16GB/512GB or better Attractive near high-spec Air pricing if its display, ports and sustained performance are useful to you.
4 MacBook Air M3, 13- or 15-inch Buyers wanting a newer platform 16GB preferred Worth considering when the premium over an equivalent M2 is small, or its battery or configuration is materially better.
5 MacBook Air M2, 15-inch Large-screen productivity 16GB/512GB preferred Compare against the 13-inch Air and a used 14-inch Pro; the larger workspace does not provide Pro-class cooling.
6 MacBook Pro 14-inch, M2 Pro or M3 Pro Heavy workloads and long ownership At least 16GB/512GB; consider 32GB for demanding work Buy only when the discount versus newer Pro models is meaningful.

These are value rankings, not a processor-speed list. A 16GB M1 or M2 can be a better long-term fit than an 8GB newer-generation Mac if you multitask heavily. Apple-silicon unified memory is not upgradeable after purchase. Swappa’s used MacBook guide also identifies the M2 Air as the general used-market sweet spot and the M1 Air as a budget choice.

How to judge the price

There is no reliable complete record here of 2025 sold prices across models, so don’t treat a current listing or a suggested price ceiling as a historical market average. Use buy/skip thresholds instead: the M1 Air is compelling when its price is comfortably below a comparable M2; the M2 Air is the benchmark for most buyers; and an M3 is appealing when the premium over an equivalent M2 is modest. For an M2 Air with 8GB/256GB, be especially cautious if a newer-generation or warrantied model is close in price.

In an August 2026 snapshot, Swappa showed listings around $200 for some 2020 Airs, $557 for a 2022 13-inch M2 Air, $927 for a 2025 15-inch M4 Air and $1,030 for a late-2023 14-inch M3 Pro. Back Market showed M1 Air listings from about $361 and M2 Pro listings from about $632. These are dynamic asking prices, not completed-sale values or guaranteed prices; configuration and condition vary. Check live listings at Swappa and Back Market before deciding.

#1 Best Overall
Apple MacBook Air (13-inch Retina display, 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 128GB) - Gold (Renewed)
  • Stunning 13.3-inch Retina display
  • Touch ID and the latest Apple-designed keyboard
  • Dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel UHD Graphics 617
  • Fast SSD storage and 8GB memory
  • Stereo speakers with wider stereo sound

Compare the full cost, not just the sticker: purchase price, shipping and buyer fees, likely battery replacement, missing charger, external storage, taxes, return terms and warranty. If a used Mac is only slightly cheaper than a newer sale or refurbished model with meaningful protection, the newer or warrantied option may be the better value. A $100–$200 premium for a one-year warranty and return protection can be worthwhile, depending on the competing listing and your tolerance for risk.

Which generation is the best value?

M1: the low-cost entry point

The 2020 M1 Air remains capable for web browsing, documents, calls, school, ordinary programming and light creative work. Its key trade-offs are the age of its battery, an older design than the M2 Air, and the limitations of common 8GB/256GB configurations. Treat it as a budget buy, not a bargain at any price. Apple publishes supported macOS models by release; future support for any particular Mac is not guaranteed. Check Apple’s current macOS compatibility list rather than assuming a fixed number of remaining upgrade years.

M2: the broadest recommendation

The M2 Air brings a redesigned 13.6-inch body, MagSafe charging, a better webcam and a brighter display compared with the M1 Air. Its everyday performance is not so far ahead that it warrants a large premium by itself, but its combination of newer design, age and availability in higher-memory configurations makes it the strongest all-round used choice. Seek 16GB memory and 512GB storage when the price difference is reasonable.

Rank #2
Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Laptop with A18 Pro chip: Built for AI and Apple Intelligence, Liquid Retina Display, 8GB Unified Memory, 256GB SSD Storage, 1080p FaceTime HD Camera; Blush
  • AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
  • FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
  • FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
  • UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
  • A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.

M3: a good deal only at the right premium

M3 is newer, but a generational label alone does not make a used machine a better buy. Consider it when it costs only modestly more than an equivalent M2, has substantially more memory or storage, has a healthier battery, or the price reflects the value you place on a newer machine. Swappa’s comparison likewise advises against paying a large premium over M2.

M4 and other newer models

For buyers comparing against newer-generation machines, an M4 Air may be a used or discounted-refurbished alternative, but judge its price against new and Apple Certified Refurbished inventory. The August 2026 Swappa listing snapshot above is not evidence of its 2025 price or a completed-sale value. A used unit priced near a warrantied alternative may not compensate for its older battery or weaker coverage.

Choose an Air or a Pro for the work you actually do

Choose an Air for everyday portability

The Air suits browsing, writing, office work, calls, school, ordinary coding and light photo or video editing. Its fanless design is quiet and portable. It can handle demanding tasks, but repeated long renders or builds are a different use case from short bursts of work.

Rank #3
Apple Early 2020 MacBook Air with 1.1GHz Intel Core i3 13-inch 8GB RAM 256GB SSD Storage Space Gray (Renewed)
  • 1.1GHz quad-core 10th-generation Intel Core i3 processor
  • 8GB 3733MHz LPDDR4X memory, 256GB SSD storage
  • Backlit Magic Keyboard - US English
  • Touch ID, Force Touch trackpad
  • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

Choose a 14-inch or 16-inch Pro for sustained workloads

Video exports, large software builds, 3D work, virtual machines, large music projects and heavy creative workloads can make a Pro’s active cooling, stronger sustained performance, display and port selection more useful. The 14-inch M1 Pro is a strong used professional candidate when priced near a high-spec Air. Verify the exact model and configuration rather than relying on the word “Pro.”

Do not confuse the 13-inch Touch Bar Pro with the larger Pros

The 13-inch M1/M2 MacBook Pro retains the older chassis and Touch Bar; it is not equivalent to the 14- or 16-inch Pro models in display, ports and cooling. The 13-inch M2 Pro is fanless, according to Swappa’s buyer guide. At a price close to an M1 or M2 Air, it is usually a poor value unless a specific feature meets your needs.

Set memory and storage before comparing listings

Memory: prioritize 16GB for a longer useful life

  • 8GB: Suitable for light browsing, documents, email, streaming and basic schoolwork. It is harder to recommend for heavy multitasking, development or creative applications.
  • 16GB: The preferred baseline for most buyers who expect to keep the computer for several years.
  • 24GB or 32GB: Consider for large development projects, virtual machines, professional creative work, data workloads or unusually heavy multitasking.

Because unified memory cannot be added later, compare memory before paying for a newer chip generation.

Rank #4
Apple 2026 MacBook Neo 13-inch Laptop with A18 Pro chip: Built for AI and Apple Intelligence, Liquid Retina Display, 8GB Unified Memory, 256GB SSD Storage, 1080p FaceTime HD Camera; Indigo
• A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.

Storage: 512GB is the practical default

  • 256GB: Can work for cloud-first office use, but fills quickly with photos, video, games and developer tools.
  • 512GB: A more comfortable default for mixed everyday use.
  • 1TB: Useful for local video, photography, music libraries, virtual machines or longer ownership.

An external SSD can extend a 256GB model, but it adds cost and means carrying another device. Include that expense in the comparison rather than treating the small internal drive as free savings.

Check battery condition, not just the cycle count

Battery condition can change the real value of two otherwise identical listings. Apple says the cycle count is available by holding Option while clicking the Apple menu, then choosing System Information > Hardware > Power and reviewing Cycle Count under Battery Information. Apple lists a maximum cycle count of 1,000 for M1, M2, M3 and M4 MacBook Air families. A cycle count is not a measurement of remaining runtime or battery health; ask for the battery condition or maximum capacity, whether it was replaced, and whether macOS reports “Service Recommended.” See Apple’s battery-cycle guidance.

Do not use one universal cycle-count cutoff as proof that a battery is good. Age, usage, condition and replacement quality matter too. Ask the seller for a return window in case the device’s actual battery performance differs from the listing.

Where to buy, and what protection you are paying for

Apple Certified Refurbished: lower risk

Apple says its Certified Refurbished products receive full functional testing, genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, accessories, and a one-year limited warranty; free shipping and returns are also advertised. Savings are advertised as “up to 15%,” but actual inventory and discounts vary. This is a useful benchmark for buyers who value a straightforward return and warranty over the lowest possible price. Check Apple’s refurbishment terms and the current Mac inventory.

Swappa: compare individual listings carefully

Swappa can offer a broad range of used configurations and peer-to-peer prices. Evaluate the specific seller, battery, condition, configuration and protections; a live asking price is not a sold-price average. Browse current MacBook listings.

Back Market: check the listing’s actual battery terms

Back Market describes a 30-day return period and one-year commercial warranty for its MacBook listings. Its condition grades describe cosmetic condition and should not be taken to mean that a device has a new battery or Apple-certified parts unless the individual listing says so. Read the terms and configuration for the exact listing at Back Market.

eBay and local sellers: price may be lower, diligence matters more

On eBay, review seller history, return terms, photos and the exact model. Private local listings can be inexpensive and allow an in-person inspection, but avoid remote payments or a seller who will not let you verify setup. On either channel, pay through a method with buyer protection and do not assume the word “refurbished” means the same thing across sellers.

Inspect a used MacBook before the return window closes

Before paying, request these details

  • Exact model year, screen size, chip and configuration.
  • Memory and SSD capacity, plus a photo of About This Mac.
  • Battery cycle count and battery condition or maximum capacity, plus a photo of System Information > Power.
  • Whether the battery has been replaced and whether macOS shows “Service Recommended.”
  • Confirmation that Activation Lock is removed and that no organization management remains.
  • Serial number, receipt if available, included charger and cable, and written return and warranty terms.
  • Photos of the display powered on and the device from all sides; avoid stock-photo-only listings.

At an in-person handover

  1. Ask the seller to sign out of their Apple Account, turn off Find My and erase the Mac.
  2. Start setup and confirm the Mac reaches the initial setup screen without asking for the previous owner’s credentials or showing a Remote Management screen.
  3. Inspect display uniformity, keyboard keys, trackpad, hinge, corners, ports, MagSafe connector if present, camera, speakers, Touch ID and Wi-Fi.
  4. Check the charger and cable for damage, and compare the serial number shown in the system with the listing and any purchase documentation.

After delivery

  1. Photograph the package and device condition before removing packaging or using it.
  2. Verify model, memory, storage and serial number against the listing.
  3. Check battery information and confirm no Activation Lock or Remote Management appears during setup.
  4. Test every key, port, speaker, camera and biometric sensor, then install available macOS updates.
  5. If you bought a Pro for sustained work, run a representative workload while the return option is still available.
  6. Open a return or dispute promptly if the device is locked, managed, damaged or materially different from its description.

Activation Lock and remote management are deal-breakers

A seller must remove the Mac from their Apple Account. Apple’s removal path is to sign in at iCloud Find Devices, select the Mac and choose Remove This Device; Apple documents the process at its Activation Lock support page. If setup requests the previous owner’s credentials, do not accept the Mac as ready to use.

Also watch for a Remote Management screen during setup. A Mac can appear erased yet still be enrolled by a company or school. Ask about organizational ownership, financing and proof of purchase; do not buy if the seller cannot demonstrate that the device can be set up without another organization or account controlling it.

MacBooks that are usually false economy

  • Intel MacBooks, especially older Airs: Consider only when you need a specific legacy capability such as Boot Camp or software compatibility, or for a very short-term role at a genuinely low price. Battery age, heat, fan noise, repair risk, resale value and software-support uncertainty can erase the apparent savings.
  • 13-inch Touch Bar Pro priced near an Air: Its name does not make it equivalent to the 14-inch or 16-inch Pro.
  • 8GB models at near-16GB prices: Memory cannot be upgraded, so do not pay a premium unless your workload is light and the price reflects the limitation.
  • Any device with unknown ownership, liquid damage, a locked account or a seller who refuses battery details: A low price cannot compensate for a Mac you cannot reliably use.
  • Cosmetically excellent listings with no battery evidence: Appearance grading does not establish battery health or internal condition.

Make the choice by budget and workload

  • Lowest sensible cost: Look for an M1 Air with a healthy battery and a price well below a comparable M2. An 8GB/256GB version is for light workloads; prefer 16GB if you can find it at a reasonable premium.
  • Most balanced purchase: Choose an M2 Air, preferably 16GB/512GB, if it is meaningfully cheaper than a comparable newer or warrantied Mac.
  • Long renders, large builds or heavy creative work: Compare a 14-inch M1 Pro with newer Pro models, prioritizing memory, battery and warranty alongside chip generation.
  • More screen space without a Pro: Consider a 15-inch M2 or M3 Air. Apple lists the current 15-inch Air with a 15.3-inch display, 500-nit brightness, MagSafe and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports; older models differ. Verify the exact model’s connectivity at Apple’s MacBook Air specifications page.
  • Using several external displays or specialized peripherals: Check support for the exact model and chip; do not assume all M-series MacBooks support the same display setup.
  • Used price close to new or certified refurbished: Favor the newer or better-protected option unless the used machine has a valuable configuration advantage.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
